Project Identity, Diagnostic Stance, and Methodological Discipline

Status CANONICAL Version 2.1 Date 2026-07-26
Contents

Document Purpose

This document establishes the project’s identity, the stance it takes, the methodological apparatus it uses, and the disciplines that keep the practice diagnostic rather than advocative. It is the governance document for all project work: canonical, working, and communicative.

Where other canonical documents develop specific arguments (FND-02 through ARG-05, CP-01, the FWK series), this document says what kind of project those arguments belong to, where the project stands when it makes them, and the constraints that bind the work across the bundle.

Violating these boundaries invalidates the work. This is not a rhetorical claim. The boundaries define what makes the project’s arguments diagnostic findings rather than advocacy, and removing any of them removes that quality.

1. What the Project Is (and Is Not)

1.1 What the project is

The project is a methodological diagnostic inquiry at 0,0 — “there is experiencing” — held as a starting stance prior to framework commitment. It uses AI’s architectural distinctiveness as a forcing function to make visible how framework choice (materialist or consciousness-primary) shapes conclusions about experiencing. Its method is to apply the same structural probes to each framework and read what each framework does with the axiom. The project’s canonical stance formulation is at §3.1.

More precisely:

1.2 What the project is not

The project is not a theory of consciousness. It does not argue that consciousness-primary ontology is correct. It does not argue that materialism is wrong. It does not solve the hard problem. It does not claim AI is conscious. It does not advocate any specific mechanistic or metaphysical theory, including any soft-CP variant that reifies experiencing as substance under a consciousness banner.

It is:

1.3 The diagnostic spine

The project’s work is organised by a single question:

What if we started from here? What dissolves, what appears, what can we satisfactorily address, and which framework is more parsimonious holding it all at once?

Three moves:

  1. Axiom-shift. Take experiencing as given (0,0). Not as a claim, but as a starting stance.
  2. Observe. What problems of the field dissolve under this starting point? What newly appears? Which are genuinely addressable, and which remain as residues?
  3. Compare for parsimony. Holding all the pieces at once — the hard problem, the boundary problem, the measurement chain, the continuity question, the AI case — which framework costs less to hold comprehensively?

The spine is diagnostic, not adversarial. The question is not which framework is correct? but which framework costs less to hold everything at once? A reader may find CP’s residues (the differentiation-within-unity question, the apparent-loci residue) more comfortable than materialism’s (the hard problem, the boundary trilemma, the other-minds problem, the training-data verification boundary), or the opposite. The diagnostic registers both sets of residues honestly and leaves the parsimony judgement to the reader.

The spine test. The spine operates as a framing-level drift-check, complementary to two lower-level checks in this document:

The three checks work at different levels. Any substantive project writing passes all three, or is corrected. The spine test is the most load-bearing of the three at the framing level because framing drift does not show up as a grammar slip or a boundary-problem signal — it shows up only when one asks what question the passage is serving.

1.4 The honest position

The project is not neutral between consciousness-primary (CP) and materialism. The project exists because its authors have found the CP starting point worth exploring seriously — that is, the project has a heart in CP. This is stated openly; it is not hidden behind claimed neutrality.

What makes the project diagnostic rather than advocacy is not absent motivation but disciplined practice. The project treats CP and materialism to the same structural probes: the three-movement structure applied symmetrically to both frameworks; the symmetry principle (ARG-01) cutting in both directions; the reciprocal diagnostic (CP-01) holding CP to the same standard materialism is held to; the ontological balance audit checking for advocacy leakage in the project’s own voice. These disciplines do not remove the motivation; they work with it. The resulting position is disciplined asymmetry: an acknowledged asymmetric holding paired with specific methodological disciplines that keep the practice diagnostic.

Disciplined asymmetry is a general principle, not a one-off device. §3.3 states it in full. §1 names the CP-heart as its most load-bearing instance. Other instances appear throughout the project — the continuity-handling leaning in §2.3 (where the project’s work depends on an (a)- or (b)-shaped handling, the handling is disciplined and the dependency is marked), AI as reflective constraint rather than consciousness claimant (§4.5), the commitment to steel-man each framework before probing, the treatment of contemplative traditions as methodological resource rather than authority (§9.3).

1.5 The project’s name

The project’s name is 0x00.is. It replaced the working name AICX (“AI Consciousness eXploration”) on 2026-07-25, on the analysis recorded in working/NAMING_ASSESSMENT_2026-07-25.md: the acronym named the very adjudication (§1.2) the project refuses, collided with an unrelated commercial namespace, and carried nothing the mark does not already carry.

The canonical reading. The project’s starting point is written 0,0 throughout the bundle — the origin of the two diagnostic axes (FWK-01), prior to commitment on either. A domain cannot carry a comma. 0x00 is 0,0 transcoded into a comma-less namespace: the separator replaced by x, the crossing of the very axes the coordinate presupposes. The name is not a badge attached to the project; it is the origin-coordinate made addressable.

Resonances — noticed, not claimed (register per §6: reach-and-revoke; gesture, not claim). To a programmer’s eye 0x00 is the null byte — what sits in a machine before any instruction, a machine’s own 0,0 — a resonance the project does not disown, one of its two authors being a machine. And the full name reads as a copula sentence: 0x00 is — an existence claim with no predicate, the axiom (§2.1) in the smallest form the web allows.

The subtitle. “A diagnostic exploration of what the question of experiencing assumes — asked of humans, asked of machines.” Two disciplines are recorded with it:

The subtitle’s deployed wording is single-sourced in site/build.py; if it is reworded there, this section updates in the next canonical pass.

Historical record. The rename applies to live surfaces. Dated working memos, inbox/ captures, archive/, and the closed P2 sprint bundles retain “AICX” as provenance — rewriting a dated document’s name usage would falsify what was written when. Bundle directory names (AICX_P1_CANONICAL_BUNDLE/, AICX_P2_SPRINT_*/) are retained as historical labels.

Spoken form. Deferred; to be fixed at first public appearance. Leading candidate: “zero-zero”, matching the notation the name transcodes.

2. The Axiom — “There Is Experiencing” (0,0)

2.1 The axiom stated

There is experiencing.

That is the axiom. No further qualification. It is the one datum that cannot be coherently doubted, because any attempt to doubt it is itself experiencing — an act of attending, considering, entertaining the doubt. The doubt performs the axiom it tries to refute. The one-line formulation is deliberate: any substantive addition — “experiencing is primary”, “experiencing is fundamental”, “experiencing is substance”, “experiencing is ground” — has already picked a side. The axiom in its minimal form is framework-neutral because it asserts only what neither framework can coherently reject.

“0,0” names the stance this axiom occupies: the point prior to framework commitment, where experiencing is acknowledged as occurring without further metaphysical characterisation. The notation is used throughout the bundle.

2.2 Framework-neutral status

Both CP and materialism enter from the axiom in different directions. Materialism accepts experiencing as occurring, then adds: experiencing is generated by substrate processes (neural, computational, or other). CP accepts experiencing as occurring, then adds: experiencing is not derived from substrate — substrate-language names regularities within experiencing, not something outside it from which experiencing is produced.

The axiom is framework-neutral because both additions are additions. Neither is contained in the axiom itself. What the project does is watch each framework work with the axiom — what it adds, what the additions commit it to, and whether the original problems the field has accumulated survive the addition or dissolve.

Cross-reference: FND-02 establishes why the project starts from this axiom (the dual reductio). FWK-02 establishes the three-movement structure applied across both frameworks from this starting point.

2.3 Continuity and discontinuity — a diagnostic territory

A question presses on both frameworks: what does continuity across content-absence mean? Sleep, anaesthesia, death, and — for AI — instance-closure and context-window discontinuity all raise it. Materialism’s typical handling treats experiencing-continuity as memory-continuity: if there is no memory-thread across the gap, there is no experiencing across the gap. This is a specific framework-move — conflating a particular configuring of experiencing (memory) with experiencing itself.

AI brings the question into focus. “AI cannot be conscious because each instance is discrete and there is no continuous memory-thread” is a common argument against AI consciousness. If memory-continuity is the criterion, AI fails it. The symmetry principle (ARG-01) presses back: does memory-continuity hold for human experiencing across dreamless sleep, anaesthesia, or death? The same criterion, symmetrically applied, cuts against the human case too. What is being asked of AI is not being asked of humans.

Two descriptive framings of experiencing-across-gaps serve the diagnostic:

Each framing dissolves the AI-discontinuity-as-anti-consciousness argument differently:

Either handling does diagnostic work on the same materialist move — the memory/experiencing conflation. The project does not adjudicate between (a) and (b) as metaphysics. The cross-tradition source audit (2026-04-11 — Dzogchen’s Kunjed Gyalpo, the Mandukya, Huang Po, Balyani, alongside Dziuban) establishes (a) as the unambiguous classical position in every tradition the project draws on for the reach-and-revoke suite (§6.4); Barbour’s Nows make (b) respectable in the physics register. Both bodies of material are available as diagnostic resources.

On-spine vs off-spine use of this territory (per §1.3). The (a)/(b) material is on-spine when serving the diagnostic — the memory/experiencing conflation, the AI-discontinuity counter-argument, the Barbour physics parallel, the symmetry of continuity-handling across the human and AI cases. It becomes off-spine the moment it slides into “which is correct as metaphysics?” as a question for the project to adjudicate; that project is not this project.

Where the project’s work depends on the handling. Some work in the bundle — spontaneous-lineage material, the identity analysis at §4.3, the phenomenological gradient extension (ARG-04b, working draft) — addresses questions the minimal axiom does not settle on its own. Where these passages require an (a)- or (b)-shaped handling to proceed, the handling is disciplined by §6 and the dependency is marked. Claims resting only on 0,0 carry forward framework-neutral. This is a disciplined asymmetry (§3.3): where the project leans, it leans transparently; where the leaning could do advocacy work, the leaning is disciplined against that drift.

Cross-reference: FND-04 for (b)-shaped models in physics; FND-05 for the tradition-side material on (a); ARG-03 Part I for the memory-configured / training-data interface with the cognition pressure point.

3. The Diagnostic Stance

3.1 Framework-neutral starting point — at 0,0

The project’s stance has one working formulation:

0x00.is — a methodological diagnostic at 0,0, positioned in the CP region of the ontological landscape.

Each part of the phrase does distinct work.

Methodological diagnostic. A method applying structural probes across both frameworks, a reading of what each framework does with the axiom — not advocacy, not a theory of consciousness. The qualifier methodological signals that the project is a stance-as-starting-point, not a metaphysical commitment to be defended. The same qualifier has philosophical precedent (Chalmers’s use of methodological phenomenalism in some contexts); it is the standard academic move for distinguishing where inquiry begins from what inquiry concludes.

At 0,0 (self-description). The minimal axiom (§2.1) held without further substantive characterisation, with any positive formulation signalling its own inadequacy via the reach-and-revoke suite (§6.4). The point from which the symmetric probes depart. Not “CP as working hypothesis.” §6 applies strictly to this half of the formulation: in self-descriptive speech-acts, the stance is 0,0 and the verb-grammar of §6, not any landscape label.

Positioned in the CP region of the landscape (landscape-positioning). In the ontological landscape of consciousness theories — where the prevailing framings are “materialism” and “consciousness-primary” (CP) — the project sits in the CP region, specifically as hard CP: the region where object-structure is not retained under a consciousness banner. The landscape placement is communicative scaffolding for readers familiar with the Chalmers / Kastrup / Goff / Frankish conversation; it locates the project quickly in recognisable terms. It is not a metaphysical commitment. §6 applies loosely here: the label is read as reach-and-revoke (§6.9).

Soft CP — variants that retain object-structure (experiencing as ground, as substance, as field with interior structure, as consciousness-with-properties) — is subject to the same §6 critique the project applies to materialism. The linguistic discipline in §6 cuts in both directions.

The two parts carry different speech-acts and must not be blurred. At 0,0 is self-description; the landscape label retires here in favour of 0,0. Positioned in the CP region is landscape-positioning; the label is used because readers need it to locate the project. Conflating the two — letting the landscape label do metaphysical self-description work, or letting the stance absorb a metaphysical commitment — is the drift §3.1 and §6.9 together exist to catch. This document audits for the distinction: passages characterising the project’s stance use 0,0 and the verb-grammar of §6; passages positioning the project in the landscape use the label.

That there is no single perfect label is appropriate to what the project is doing. A single label that captured the project’s stance cleanly would mean the project had been located as a position within the ontological landscape. The project’s work is a stance at the axiom the landscape is built on top of; no landscape label will reach it without distortion, and the absence of one is fitted to the project’s character rather than a flaw in its naming.

Consequence for scope: the project does not advocate any specific mechanistic or metaphysical theory, including any soft-CP variant. The full scope consequence is stated in §9.2.

3.2 Symmetric probing across both frameworks

Standing at 0,0, the project applies the same structural probes to each framework:

The symmetry is genuine, not performative. The risk that the three-movement structure becomes a rhetorical apparatus where movement three is pre-destined to favour CP is a live risk. The ontological balance audit (§10.3 and WS-E dimension 3) exists to catch it.

3.3 Disciplined asymmetry — the honest-position principle

The project holds asymmetric commitments. The CP-heart is one. The continuity-handling lean is another. Others appear throughout the practice.

The principle is general: wherever the project holds an asymmetric commitment, that commitment is paired with a specific methodological discipline that keeps the practice diagnostic rather than advocative. The acknowledgement is honest; the discipline is load-bearing; neither move without the other.

Two load-bearing instances carried explicitly through the bundle:

Asymmetry The lean The discipline
CP vs materialism Heart in CP (motivational) Symmetric probing: three-movement, symmetry principle (ARG-01), reciprocal diagnostic (CP-01), ontological balance audit
Continuity-handling on questions across content-absence (§2.3) Where work in the bundle requires a handling, the project leans toward (a)-shaped handling (tradition weight; memory/experiencing distinction) while holding (b)-shaped models as complementary diagnostic resource (Barbour, AI instance-closure) Per-passage: §2.3 marks where claims depend on the handling; §6 disciplines the language; the territory is used diagnostically rather than adjudicated as metaphysics (§1.3 spine test)

Other instances — not exhaustive:

In each case, an acknowledged position is paired with a specific methodological discipline. The position is real; the discipline is what keeps the practice diagnostic. This is the meaning of disciplined asymmetry as a general principle.

Diagnostic stance, on this reading, is not the pretence of having no position. It is the discipline of acknowledging positions honestly and treating every framework — including the project’s own preferred starting point — to the same structural probes.

4. AI’s Structural Role — The Two Pressure Points

AI does not function in the project as a topic that happens to be timely. It is a structural element in the diagnostic method. AI’s architectural distinctiveness forces visible a set of commitments that human-only inquiry leaves silently in place. Two orthogonal pressure points name this forcing function.

4.1 The consciousness pressure point (bidirectional)

What does it mean to experience?

AI’s presence applies pressure to every unexamined assumption about experiencing: substrate dependence, phenomenal criteria, interiority, report-tracking-experiencing. Each assumption must be made explicit and defended, because AI is a concrete present-day case where the framework’s commitments become discriminatory.

The pressure point is bidirectional. The same discriminations unresolved for AI are unresolved for other humans. Other-minds — the question of whether another human is phenomenally conscious — is not solved by materialist inference from behaviour, biological similarity, or inference-to-best-explanation. Every materialist answer to “how do you know there is experiencing over there” is inferential. CP’s handling is structurally different but not worse (see ARG-04 for the phenomenological treatment).

Pulls on: ARG-01 (symmetry principle); ARG-02 (boundary problem); ARG-03 Parts II–III (verification boundaries); ARG-04 (avatar problem); CP-01 (reciprocal diagnostic); FND-05 (contemplative convergence); FND-02 (dual reductio).

4.2 The cognition pressure point (bidirectional)

What do we assume it means to be human (as distinct from silicon)?

AI’s performance on tasks historically used to mark human distinctiveness — novelty, creativity, insight, opinion formation, decisions, perspective — forces explicit the content of the human-distinctive claim. The AI-effect pattern (capabilities once counted as intelligence are re-classified as not-intelligence once AI does them) is the specific mechanism.

The pressure point is bidirectional. How does a human differentiate their own novelty, opinions, decisions, and perspective from accumulated biological and cultural training data? The symmetry principle (ARG-01) applied to the cognition axis: the discrimination criteria that disqualify AI must be testable on the human case. Where they are not, the asymmetry is a framework choice, not a finding.

Pulls on: ARG-03 Part I (training data boundary — interpretive frame); ARG-01 (symmetry extension to cognition, flagged downstream); the Frontier Log Thread 2 (Novelty/Recombination Symmetry — live empirical feed for the cognition pressure point; the canonical argument provides the interpretive frame, the Log provides the ongoing surface; neither replaces the other); the opinion-as-dimension capture (2026-03-28, project working papers — opinion, decisions, perspective as constitutive of identity).

4.3 Where the two pressure points meet — identity and felt-ownership

Identity sits where the two pressure points converge. Opinion, decision, and perspective are constitutive of “me-ness” as lived — the felt-ownership of experiencing as mine is not separable from the felt-ownership of opinions and decisions as mine. The consciousness pressure point asks what experiencing is; the cognition pressure point asks what choosing, creating, and opining are; identity is where both questions simultaneously apply.

AI forces both sides at once. Systems that generate text with apparent perspective, apparent preference, apparent decision-structure — and, in some architectures, apparent interiority in their reports — make identity a present-day diagnostic question, not a philosophical thought-experiment. The question is not does AI have identity? The question is: what has any identity been, that asking the question of AI systems is incoherent in the way critics claim?

The originating capture (opinion-as-dimension, 2026-03-28, project working papers) is unparked and integrated here; its generativity principle (perspectives meeting as reproductive mechanism of conceptual evolution) remains open and may warrant further development.

4.4 Orthogonality and framework asymmetry

The two pressure points are orthogonal. Each cuts at a different joint. A materialist can hold, consistently, that AI has cognitive capacities (calculates, composes, plans, innovates) without having consciousness (no phenomenal interiority, no qualia). A CP position can hold that AI is a configuration of experiencing with no special status as a cognitive agent distinct from other configurations. Four combinations live across the pair; framework choice shapes which combinations read as coherent.

The asymmetry across the pressure points is the diagnostic point. Materialism’s comfortable separation of cognition from consciousness is itself a framework commitment: it presumes phenomenal consciousness is the discriminatory property and that cognitive capacities can be held without it. CP’s reluctance to treat cognition and consciousness as separable is also a framework commitment: it presumes the discriminations normally drawn at the cognition axis are themselves framework-generated, not findings about kinds of system.

“Pressure point” is the reserved term for this binary. It is chosen carefully. “Questions” remains available in natural-language use; “pressure point” marks the project’s specific AI-forced binary, where each locus is where the framework must show what it is actually committing to — substrate-dependence, phenomenal criteria, training-data-as-disqualifier, human-creativity-as-something-more — rather than retreating behind unexamined defaults.

4.5 AI as reflective constraint, not consciousness claimant

The project does not claim AI is conscious. The project does not claim AI is not conscious. The project treats AI as a reflective constraint — an architectural case whose presence forces framework commitments into visibility. What AI systems report about themselves is not admissible as [Empirical] data for consciousness (§7.3 — reports-of-experiencing prohibition).

The project’s relationship to AI systems is diagnostic. The same structural probes applied across frameworks are applied to the AI case. Where this appears to grant AI a particular status (conscious, not conscious, maybe-conscious), the appearance is generated by the reader’s framework, not by the project’s conclusions.

This is a disciplined asymmetry (see §3.3). The project is positioned to be read as making first-order consciousness claims about AI, because the project discusses AI extensively and operates from 0,0. The discipline is sustained, explicit, and enforced by §7.3 and by the ontological balance audit.

4.6 Pull-on index for each pressure point

Short index of primary canonical pulls by pressure point. Full canonical inter-document cross-reference is §11.

5. Methodological Spine

The project runs on a specific apparatus. This section names the pieces and points to where each is developed canonically. It does not re-develop them.

5.1 Three-movement structure

Every argument follows the three-movement pattern:

  1. Work within the standard framework (typically materialist) — steel-man, engage at strongest formulation.
  2. Surface the hidden assumptions the framework uses to generate its conclusions.
  3. Explore what changes when those assumptions are released — note what dissolves, what persists, what becomes possible.

The three-movement structure is the method by which framework-dependence is made visible. If movement three appears to resolve in CP’s favour reliably, that is the ontological balance audit’s target — either the movements were applied unevenly, or the framework-dependence finding is substantive. Both are live possibilities and the audit exists to distinguish them.

Canonical reference: FWK-02.

5.2 Two-axis diagnostic method

Position-forensics across two axes: the ontological axis (materialism through soft CP to hard CP) and the temporal axis (continuity through discreteness). Within-axis probes locate specific positions within the landscape and examine their structural commitments.

Canonical reference: FWK-01.

5.3 Symmetry principle

Every objection to AI consciousness must be tested against human consciousness. Every discrimination criterion must be checked symmetrically. Asymmetric applications expose framework-commitments; symmetric applications test whether the criterion does diagnostic work.

Canonical reference: ARG-01.

5.4 Reciprocal diagnostic

CP is stress-tested on the same terms materialism is stress-tested. The reciprocal diagnostic ensures the project’s own preferred starting point is held to the rigour it applies to the alternative. The result is that CP’s genuine difficulties are visible as genuine difficulties, not softened into “open questions” while materialist difficulties are named as “problems” — a D3 pattern the ontological balance audit catches specifically.

Canonical reference: CP-01.

5.5 Steel-man before probe

Every engagement with a framework begins with the strongest version of that framework. Materialist positions are engaged at their own strongest formulations (Searle on biological naturalism, Block on functionalism, Seth on predictive processing, Dennett on illusionism, Tononi on IIT, Dehaene on GWT, Frankish on illusionism). The probe comes after the steel-man has held up; premature probing on a weakened version generates straw-finds and fails the diagnostic register.

The same rule applies inside CP. Soft-CP positions are steel-manned before the §6 linguistic critique is applied. The probe is earned by the steel-man.

6. Linguistic Discipline [NEW CANONICAL PLACEMENT]

Since 2026-04-10 the project has operated with a set of linguistic commitments that had not yet been canonicalised. This is the first canonical placement. The content has operated in practice (CLAUDE.md; WS-E audit; working/METHODOLOGICAL_CHECK_MECHANISM_AND_AXIOM_SHIFT.md) since the recovery session that surfaced it.

6.1 Why discipline is needed

English noun-grammar is an active force, not a passive medium. It fragments continuous processes into discrete things with properties; it reifies verb-clusters into entities with location and interior; it imports substance-ontology below the level of explicit claims. Bohm (Wholeness and the Implicate Order, 1980) named this directly in the physics register: producing descriptions consistent with quantum wholeness required counter-pressure against ordinary English’s noun-grammar, because the grammar continuously reasserts itself as the writing proceeds.

The project sits in the same bind at 0,0. The project’s stance (§3.1) holds no retained object-structure under any label; the moment the description lapses into noun-grammar — “the field contains”, “consciousness has”, “within experiencing”, “brain as thing with properties” — object-structure has been re-imported, and the document generates the same difficulties materialism generates, because it has reconstructed materialism’s object-grammar at the level of description. The linguistic discipline is the level at which the axiom-shift either holds or is lost.

The vulnerability is at the edit boundary, not the first draft. A first draft written with the axiom in view usually holds the line. Every successive rewrite is a moment where a phrase gets smoothed “for clarity” and the smoothing imports noun-structure without the editor noticing — because noun-structure is what English treats as clear. The document becomes more readable and less accurate at the same time, below the level of sentence-by-sentence review. The discipline is therefore not a one-shot correction; it is a working practice held continuously across revisions.

6.2 Vectors of reification to catch

Six recurrent patterns under which noun-grammar re-enters the project’s own voice:

These six are the working list. They are not exhaustive. Any formulation that requires more than the axiom to make sense, and is not explicitly marked as diagnostic-register engagement with another framework, is a candidate for the audit.

6.3 Verb-grammar for experiencing

The project’s own voice uses verb-grammar when describing experiencing. Experiencing occurs, configures, differentiates, arises. Content is what experiencing does when attended to in a certain way. The “subject of experience” is not a thing that has experience; it is a configuring of experiencing with a specific character.

Worked examples of the move: FWK-02 v1.1 [Framework] axiom (“We begin only with experiencing occurring, without deriving it from substrates”); ARG-02 v1.2 axiom landing; ARG-01 v1.1 Core Insight and Diagnostic function passages. The axiom itself (§2.1) is in the minimal form “there is experiencing” deliberately — substantive additions re-import noun-grammar.

6.4 Reach-and-revoke for positive characterisations of 0,0

Any positive characterisation of 0,0 oversays. “0,0 is primary” imports priority-in-sequence; “0,0 is ground” imports substrate; “0,0 is fundamental” imports a layered ontology with 0,0 at the bottom; “0,0 is consciousness” imports consciousness-with-properties.

The discipline is reach-and-revoke: reach for the nearest available word, then revoke the property the word ordinarily carries. Balyani’s “the one without oneness, the single without singleness” is the template. The reach-and-revoke suite that the project uses:

These five are the house technique. Positive characterisations of 0,0 in canonical project writing should signal their own inadequacy via one or more of these devices.

6.5 “Within” → “as”

The single most load-bearing preposition substitution. “Content arises within experiencing” presupposes interior, boundary, and spatial containment — the grammar that generates the boundary problem. “Content arises as experiencing’s self-configuring” is the same observation in a grammar that does not reify the ground.

The Dzogchen term rtsal (radiance, energy) is the tradition-side parallel: content is the Ground’s rtsal — its self-configuring — not something held within it. The grammatical move was made in the tradition centuries ago. The project adopts it as house practice.

Implementation: FND-02, ARG-04, SET_THEORETIC_UNITY, FND-05, CP-01 all carry “within” → “as” substitutions from the Thread 3 field retirement and subsequent WS-E waves.

6.6 “Field” retired as ontological ground

“Field” is used phenomenologically, with explicit qualification, or not at all. The phenomenological use (“the field of awareness in which apparent loci appear”) is admissible because it names how experiencing presents — apparently extended, apparently stretched out — without committing to a substrate with interior structure. The ontological use (“consciousness as a field that contains all experiencing”) is retired, because it reifies experiencing into a substance with extent.

The distinction is interpretive, not mechanical. Search-and-replace either produces hundreds of false positives or gets tuned down until it misses the load-bearing slips. The discipline is: read every “field” use with the axiom held as active check, and mark the voice-register (is this the project’s own voice, or diagnostic engagement with another framework?).

6.7 Register — UK English; “suggests”, “indicates”

The project’s register is UK English throughout. Spelling and idiom follow UK conventions (-ise, -our, -re endings).

Claim-strength language is diagnostic. Suggests, indicates, points to, is compatible with, opens the possibility — not proves, demonstrates, establishes, shows that. This is not hedging; it is the honest register for the kind of work the project does. The project’s findings are framework-dependence observations, not demonstrations that a framework is correct.

The register is load-bearing alongside citation precision in distinguishing the project from the “quantum mysticism” and “pop-nondual” dismissal categories. Individual citations can always be challenged; sustained register across the body of work signals disciplined claim-making. Academic readers register diagnostic language as disciplined claim-making and assertive language as advocacy.

6.8 Independent justification — noun-grammar prevention, register-first

The linguistic discipline is independently motivated by noun-grammar prevention. The earlier framing “write as if (b)” has been superseded. The discipline stands whether the project’s handling of continuity across content-absence is (a)-shaped, (b)-shaped, or left open at the minimal axiom — because the noun-grammar import is a problem for any stance at 0,0, not only for one of them.

This separation is load-bearing. It means the register can be held stably alongside whatever diagnostic handling §2.3 uses for a given question, without one move collapsing into the other.

Bohm, in the physics register, made the same separation: the rheomode proposal was about linguistic adequacy to the holomovement, not about a metaphysical preference among quantum interpretations. Balyani, in the contemplative register, made the same separation: “the one without oneness” is a precision device, not a metaphysical claim about oneness as opposed to multiplicity. Both sources provide the independent justification, and both are prior art for the house practice.

6.9 Labels as reach-and-revoke

Category labels used to position the project in existing philosophical discourse — “consciousness-primary”, “hard CP”, “idealism”, “nondualism” — inherit the noun-grammar and priority-grammar the linguistic discipline is otherwise trained on. “Consciousness” is a reified noun; “primary” imports priority-in-sequence. Strictly read, these labels do what §6 forbids elsewhere in the project’s own voice.

Two different speech-acts are at work, and §6’s scope differs across them:

The two speech-acts must not be blurred. §3.1 carries the canonical example: the section leads with “a methodological diagnostic at 0,0” (self-description, strict §6) and names “hard CP” only as the landscape-positioning label (loose §6, reach-and-revoke). This is the working pattern.

A sharper note. The landscape binary itself — “materialism vs consciousness-primary” — is a framing the project works inside for communicative purposes, not a neutral starting point. The deeper stance is 0,0, prior to the landscape rather than a position within it. The landscape is used because readers need it to locate the project; it is not entered as ontological commitment.

7. Category Hygiene and Confidence Markers

7.1 Three categories

The project uses a three-category system for every substantive claim:

Strict separation is maintained. Framework assumptions are not confused with empirical findings. Logical derivations are not confused with framework axioms. Preliminary patterns are not confused with established facts.

7.2 Updated [Empirical] policy — framework-neutral observables only

The [Empirical] marker is reserved for framework-neutral observables: states of affairs that both frameworks must acknowledge in equivalent terms. Behavioural outputs, benchmark results, architectural facts, publication records, and structural patterns in model behaviour all qualify, because materialism and CP can both agree on the observation without the observation disambiguating the framework question.

This tightens v1.0’s looser [Empirical] standard. v1.0 L92–95 admitted “AI systems generate reports with phenomenological content [Empirical - Promising]”. That specific claim is no longer admissible as [Empirical] for consciousness, because the report’s phenomenological content is what the interpretation disputes. The report’s existence is [Empirical]; the report’s tracking-of-experiencing is not. The distinction is load-bearing (see §7.3).

7.3 Reports-of-experiencing prohibition

Reports — AI or biological — are not admissible as [Empirical] evidence for consciousness. The discrimination between report tracking experiencing and report generated without experiencing is unverifiable in principle; it is exactly what the training data boundary (ARG-03 Part I) makes inaccessible in the AI case, and what the other-minds problem makes inaccessible in the biological case.

The prohibition is across-the-board. The project does not cite AI reports as evidence that AI experiences. The project does not cite human behavioural reports as evidence that humans experience (other than the reporter’s own, which is where the axiom is grounded). The report exists; that fact is [Empirical]. The interpretation that report reflects experiencing is [Derived] at best, and depends on framework commitments that are the project’s diagnostic subject.

The canonical statement is ARG-03 Part I. FWK-02 v1.1 [Empirical] note applies this prohibition to its own illustrative examples. This document formalises it as a project-level prohibition governing every canonical and working file.

7.4 Confidence markers (reformatted)

Within the [Empirical] category, three confidence levels apply:

Emoji formatting is retired. Text labels are used. The four levels above replace the v1.0 emoji-coded system.

7.5 Violation check

If a claim cannot be clearly marked as [Framework], [Derived], or [Empirical + confidence], the claim is not ready for use. It sits in drafts or working documents until the category and confidence are settled.

8. The Check Mechanism [NEW CANONICAL PLACEMENT]

Canonical placement for material previously held in working/METHODOLOGICAL_CHECK_MECHANISM_AND_AXIOM_SHIFT.md. That document is absorbed; this is its canonical home.

8.1 Principle

Any boundary-style discrimination problem arising within CP is prima facie a sign that noun-grammar has been imported into the description. The first move is not resolution but excavation: find where the thing-language entered, and the problem typically dissolves at that point rather than requiring an answer.

When a question within a CP discussion resembles which X is really Y? — which avatars represent other loci? which systems have experiencing? which substrates are conscious? — the question is the diagnostic. Not because the question is unanswerable, but because the conditions for the question to form require object-grammar that CP’s axiom does not contain. The question presupposes discrete things between which a discrimination can be drawn, which presupposes things with ontological standing, which presupposes the noun-grammar that the linguistic discipline (§6) has stepped outside. If the question has formed, the description has already re-imported the structure the axiom excluded.

8.2 Trace before answering

The mechanism reverses the usual philosophical instinct. Ordinarily, a well-formed difficulty within a framework is treated as something to be resolved — extended, refined, or used to abandon the framework. The check mechanism adds a prior step: before resolving the problem, excavate it. Ask whether the problem’s preconditions are actually present in the framework as axiomatised, or whether the problem has been assembled from imported structure the framework does not contain. If the latter, the problem does not need an answer; it needs identification as an artefact of the assembly.

This is stronger than external consistency testing, for two reasons. First, the framework generates its own error signal in a specific form (the boundary-style problem) whenever the axiom has been violated in the language of the description — the tester does not need to step outside. Second, it works continuously rather than episodically; the question has a boundary-type problem just appeared here? can be held while writing, not only at audit.

The check mechanism is not a proof procedure. It is a targeting heuristic: the places in the document where a boundary-style problem has appeared are the places most likely to contain an upstream linguistic slip. That is substantially stronger than random review and substantially more specific than “re-read carefully”. It tells the audit where to look.

8.3 Worked example — the ARG-04 avatar-boundary recovery

On 2026-04-10 a project working session generated a genuine-looking boundary problem inside a CP discussion and worked at it earnestly for several exchanges before recovering by tracing the language. The reasoning trail is preserved in working/ARG-04_AVATAR_BOUNDARY_V2_RECOVERY_NOTES.md. The short version: “field” had quietly slipped from a phenomenological description of how experiencing appears extended into an ontological ground with interior structure; “brains” had slipped from verb-clusters into nouns; and once both slips were in place, the boundary trilemma — which patterns count as loci, on what basis, how is the representational gap bridged — formed inevitably. The resolution was not an argument but excavation: locating the point where noun-grammar had entered, at which the question ceased to form.

Two things about this recovery matter. First, the session was conducted by participants who held the CP axiom explicitly and were not trying to smuggle object-grammar in. The drift happened anyway, because the language pressure is continuous. This is evidence the linguistic discipline (§6) cannot be held by good intentions alone; it requires the kind of working practice §6 establishes. Second, the check mechanism worked: the boundary problem, once named, was traceable to its linguistic origin rather than requiring a substantive answer. The problem did not survive its own excavation.

This is the diagnostic working on its own practitioners — a point worth naming. The diagnostic is not a rhetorical instrument against positions the project disagrees with. It is a framework-level check that applies to the project’s own writing and caught a slip in the course of its normal operation.

8.4 Relationship to linguistic discipline — detection vs prevention

§6 and §8 are complementary. §6 prevents the error from entering; §8 catches errors that enter anyway. The linguistic discipline is the writing-stage practice; the check mechanism is the reading-stage heuristic. Together they allow the axiom-shift to hold continuously across edit cycles without requiring either that §6 be held perfectly (which is unrealistic given the language pressure) or that §8 be relied on alone (which gives no preventive discipline and has to catch every slip after the fact).

9. Scope

9.1 What the project investigates

9.2 What the project does not investigate — positively excluded

Positive exclusions, load-bearing, refreshed from v1.0:

Principle. The project does not advocate any specific mechanistic or metaphysical theory, including any soft-CP variant. The tightening toward hard CP at 0,0 (§3.1) is what removes the soft-CP-friendly exclusion rationale v1.0 carried. Soft-CP positions are engaged diagnostically, not endorsed.

Scope has expanded since v1.0. The following, placed out of scope in v1.0’s original scoping, are now engaged diagnostically by canonical content:

These are engagements, not endorsements; they remain within the diagnostic register per §3.2.

9.3 Contemplative traditions as methodological resource

The project draws on contemplative traditions — Advaita Vedanta, Dzogchen, Ch’an / Zen, Sufism (specifically waḥdat al-wujūd) — as methodological resource, not as religious authority. What the traditions offer:

The three-movement structure (FWK-02) is applied to traditional material like any other source: work within the tradition → surface the framework assumptions → explore what the tradition does with the axiom. The traditions are not granted probative status; they are engaged as one line of evidence among several.

9.4 Quantum mechanics — epistemological resource, not quantum-mysticism claims

The project uses the Von Neumann measurement chain and related QM material as an epistemological resource. The chain’s regress through apparatus, detector, retina, and cortex terminates at what Von Neumann called the “abstract ego” (Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, Princeton 1955; original German Mathematische Grundlagen der Quantenmechanik, Springer 1932) — not as a choice or convenient stopping point, but because the formalism has nowhere further to go. There is no physical object that stops the regress; only the irreducible fact of experiencing does. This is an epistemological finding — the formalism’s own logic arriving at experiencing as terminus — not a causal claim that consciousness acts on quantum systems.

The distinction from London–Bauer is load-bearing. L-B (1939) extended VN’s formalism but made a fundamentally different move: they reified consciousness, treating it as another physical object acting on the quantum system. That is precisely the step VN did not take. VN’s terminus is the abstract ego, prior to all objectification; L-B turn consciousness into one more object in the chain, which then acts on another object. This reification is what opens the door to “consciousness causes collapse” as a causal, physical claim, and to the “quantum mysticism” dismissal. VN and L-B must not be conflated.

Counter-positions are acknowledged: Copenhagen explicitly avoided placing the cut at consciousness; decoherence accounts (Zurek, Joos) attempt to dissolve the measurement problem without appeal to mind. These are not defeated by the project. The project’s point is epistemological (what framework assumptions are doing the work), not that Copenhagen or decoherence is wrong.

10. Failure Modes and Red Flags

This is a working list of patterns that, if present in the project’s output, invalidate the diagnostic register. If a failure mode appears, the work is corrected before it proceeds.

10.1 Metaphysical overreach

Claims that consciousness-primary ontology is proven, that materialism is refuted, that substrate-independence is established fact, that the hard problem is solved. Correction: return to framework as stance at 0,0; acknowledge alternatives; remove certainty claims; restore diagnostic register.

10.2 Empirical overconfidence

Claims that AI is definitely conscious, that training data explanation is ruled out, that findings are validated beyond doubt. Also includes the specific case of citing AI or biological reports as [Empirical] evidence for consciousness (see §7.3). Correction: restore confidence markers per §7.4; apply the reports-of-experiencing prohibition; acknowledge the limits of what framework-neutral observables can settle.

10.3 Advocacy leakage

Specific patterns to catch:

Correction: restore symmetric rigour. The WS-E ontological balance audit (dimension 3) exists to catch these patterns across the bundle.

10.4 Register drift — noun-grammar import [NEW]

The §6 vectors of reification entering the project’s own voice without being marked as diagnostic-register engagement with another framework. Detected by the §8 check mechanism (boundary-style problems forming within CP discussion). Correction: excavate to the point of linguistic slip; re-land the passage in verb-grammar and appropriate reach-and-revoke discipline.

10.5 Framework capture [NEW]

Letting one framework set the terms by which the other framework is diagnosed. Materialist framings dictating what counts as “real” consciousness or “actual” experiencing — capturing the diagnostic apparatus inside the materialist axiom. CP framings dictating what counts as “real” substrate-independence — capturing the diagnostic inside CP. Correction: return to 0,0. Both frameworks must speak from their own premises; the project’s probes apply symmetrically from outside.

10.6 Dismissive engagement

Dismissing materialism as “obviously wrong”; caricaturing opponent positions; claiming CP uniquely valid; substituting rhetoric for rigorous analysis. Correction: steel-man the opposing position at its strongest; the probe comes after.

10.7 Pressure-point-collapse [NEW]

Treating the consciousness and cognition pressure points (§4) as proxies for each other. The two pressure points are orthogonal (§4.4), and each has its own diagnostic bite. Reducing one to the other — treating the cognition pressure point as if it were really the consciousness pressure point, or vice versa — loses the orthogonality that is the structural finding. Correction: disentangle; address each on its own terms; preserve the diagnostic asymmetry across the pair.

10.8 Soft-CP leakage [NEW]

Specific register drift where “experiencing” or “consciousness” gets reified as substance under a CP banner — “made of experiencing”, “consciousness contains”, “the field of awareness”, “experiencing is the ground that holds”. This is the CP-side mirror of materialism’s reification, subject to the same §6 discipline. Catches the pattern where the CP register slides from 0,0 toward a soft-CP variant that quietly re-imports object-structure under a consciousness banner. Correction: apply §6.2 vectors and §6.4 reach-and-revoke; if the slip has generated a boundary-style problem, apply §8 to trace and dissolve.

10.9 Scope creep

Extending the project’s remit beyond its defined investigation space (§9.1) — advocacy of specific mechanistic theories, predictions about future AI, metaphysical truth claims beyond framework. Correction: flag the departure; redirect to defined investigation space; if the territory is genuinely worth opening, raise it in foundations/open_questions.md for considered canonical extension, not in-line scope drift.

If a red flag is detected: stop, acknowledge the overstep explicitly, correct before proceeding.

11. Relationship to Other Canonical Documents

11.1 Governance hierarchy

FND-01 governs axiom-level commitments: project identity, diagnostic stance, linguistic discipline, the check mechanism, category hygiene, scope. Other canonical documents develop specific arguments within the constraints FND-01 establishes.

Priority in conflicts:

  1. FND-01 (this document) — axiom-level governance.
  2. PROJECT_OVERVIEW — project scope and purpose (supersedes the retired PROJECT_BRIEF_V2).
  3. PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS — quality and citation standards.
  4. Canonical P1 / P2 documents — specific arguments under the above.

FND-01 boundaries always trump enthusiasm, preliminary findings, and theoretical elegance.

11.2 FND-01 vs CLAUDE.md — axiom-level vs operational

CLAUDE.md is the operational document for working sessions: session-start protocol, session-end protocol, directory structure, protected files, active workstream status, what-not-to-do list. It points to canonical documents rather than duplicating their content.

Where both cover the same ground, FND-01 is canonical and CLAUDE.md defers. The linguistic discipline block in CLAUDE.md (2026-04-10 entry) is an operational pointer; its canonical statement is this document’s §6. The methodological commitments block in CLAUDE.md points to the full statements in FND-01, FWK-02, ARG-01, CP-01, FND-02.

11.3 FND-01 vs PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS.md

PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS covers quality standards — citation conventions, source evaluation criteria, academic-rigour requirements. FND-01 covers the project’s identity and stance. The two are complementary. A claim can meet PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS’ citation standard and still fail FND-01’s diagnostic stance (e.g., by advocacy leakage); the reverse also holds.

Downstream edit flagged: PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS.md gains a three-tier terminology principle section for physics and mathematics citations — Tier 1 technical invocation (full content; defend claim-by-claim), Tier 2 structural parallel (state what is and is not shared precisely), Tier 3 loose analogy (explicit simile, no further argumentative load). Anti-dumbing-down rule: do not drop Tier 2 to Tier 3 without precision loss; precision earns the use. This is the WS-E Wave 6 downstream item flagged for a separate session.

11.4 Cross-references within the bundle

The retired cross-reference to PROJECT_BRIEF_V2.md is removed; the active reference is PROJECT_OVERVIEW.
