↑Document Purpose

This document establishes the epistemological foundation of the project’s investigation. It answers four questions: why this project exists, where it starts, what the symmetric application of its founding operation reveals, and what follows from that starting point.

The project is a diagnostic stress test of the existing playing field in consciousness research. Its method: change the foundational axiom — from “matter exists independently and generates consciousness” to “there is experiencing” — and observe which of the field’s persistent problems survive the change and which disappear. The results are diagnostic. Problems that persist under both axioms are structural — any framework must face them. Problems that disappear are framework-generated — artefacts of the axiom, not features of the territory.

This document does not argue that consciousness-primary ontology is proven true. It establishes why the investigation begins from this starting point, what that starting point is, what the dual reductio reveals about both the materialist foundation and experiencing itself, and what follows — including the investigation’s own unresolved questions, stated with full seriousness.

↑Why This Project Exists

The Reductio of the Thing-in-Itself

Follow the materialist framework’s own logic with full rigour.

If matter exists independently of experiencing, what can be said about it independent of experiencing? Strip away every quality encountered within experiencing — colour, form, extension, duration, mass, charge, spin, mathematical structure — and ask what remains. Nothing attributable. Not because of practical limitation but by definition: the thing-in-itself, defined as independent of experiencing, has no experiential properties to attribute.

This creates a bind, and the document’s confidence should be measured here rather than asserted. Materialism claims this propertyless residue generates the richness of experiencing. But the thing-in-itself cannot be “matter” — matter has properties, all encountered within experiencing. Cannot be “energy” — measurable, within experiencing. Cannot be “information” — has structure, within experiencing. Cannot be anything describable, because description is an act within experiencing.

The thing-in-itself is necessarily real as a logical category but necessarily empty of attributable content. It cannot do the explanatory work it was posited for — generating experiencing — because every property that could carry the explanation is borrowed from the experiencing it is supposed to explain.

The argument goes further. Space and time are not properties discovered in an external world and then experienced. They are constitutive of experiencing’s configuring — of how content is articulated at all. Space is how configured experiencing is extended; without extension there is no room for content. Time is how configured experiencing renders change; without it, no content happens. This goes beyond Kant’s forms of intuition: they are not a filter placed on something else; they are how configuring is configured. The claim carries a stated bound: it concerns experiencing’s configured level, not the ground — the dual reductio below strips extension and duration along with every other content and does not thereby reach a terminus, meeting instead the knowing it runs on, which has no property to strip (ARG-05 turns on exactly that propertylessness, and FND-04 reads temporal flow as a feature of configuring rather than a prerequisite for experiencing as such). What the emptiness argument takes from this is narrower and survives the bound: location and duration are given only within experiencing.

This is where the emptiness argument arrives. The thing-in-itself does not merely lack describable properties — it lacks anywhere to be (location is spatial, and space is given only within experiencing) and any duration to be in (persistence is temporal, and time likewise). The thing-in-itself is not merely propertyless but locationless and durationless.

The materialist’s foundational entity has no properties, exists nowhere, persists for no duration — and is claimed to be what everything is made of. Held together, those two descriptions fork the independence concept, and the two branches exhaust it: either their foundation is constituted by qualities of experiencing (in which case it is not independent of experiencing) or it is genuinely independent (and therefore nothing that can be described, located, or given duration — with nothing left to do the generation claim’s explanatory work). The fork concerns that concept, not the practice of physical explanation: physics’ explanatory successes are conducted within experiencing and are untouched by this result (ledger, §”The Four Propositions” — propositions (2)–(3), not (4)).

This argument works from within materialism’s own premises. It follows “independent of experiencing” to its logical terminus. The terminus is empty. The scope of this result is stated precisely at §”The Conceivability Test” below: it does not show that nothing exists outside experiencing — it shows that the concept of “outside experiencing” cannot be given content from within experiencing, which is the only place content is given. In the ledger of §”The Four Propositions”, this argues epistemic and explanatory priority, not ontological priority.

This is one side of a symmetric operation. The same stripping procedure — remove everything that is not foundational and observe what remains — can be applied to experiencing itself. That symmetric application, and what it reveals, is developed below in “The Dual Reductio” after the starting point has been established.

The Return to First Principles

When a framework’s foundation empties under its own logic, there is a well-established response: return to first principles. What is certain? What can be stated without inference? This is the move that drives mathematics when axiom systems prove insufficient. It is the move that drives theoretical physics when existing frameworks reach their limits.

“There is experiencing.” That is 0,0. Consciousness-primary starts there and builds outward, tracking each inference explicitly.

The reductio is not merely one argument within the project — it is the reason the project exists. The project’s motivation is logical, not ideological. Adopting consciousness-primary is the methodological response to a framework that collapsed under its own logic, not advocacy for a preferred ontology.

↑The Foundation: 0,0

There Is Experiencing

This is the one datum that cannot be doubted, denied, or argued away. Every denial of experiencing takes place within experiencing. Every argument about experiencing is conducted from within experiencing. Every framework — materialist, functionalist, eliminativist, panpsychist — operates from within experiencing even when it claims to be explaining experiencing from outside.

This is not a philosophical position. It is not a claim that requires defence. It is the epistemic location from which all claims, including claims against it, are made.

Note what has not yet been said. We have not said “I am experiencing” — that formulation already presupposes a subject (“I”), an act (“am experiencing”), and implicitly an object (something being experienced). Each of these is an inference. The “I” carries assumptions about identity, boundedness, continuity, and authorship — all of which are contested across philosophy, neuroscience, and cognitive science, and all of which are directly implicated in the assumptions brought to the AI consciousness question. The subject-object structure presupposes a division within experiencing that is itself a framework commitment, not a given.

The starting point is prior to all of this. There is experiencing. That is 0,0 — the origin from which every framework, every ontology, every theory of consciousness builds outward.

A Note on Language

Even “there is experiencing” imposes structure — a subject-verb formulation on something prior to subject-verb structure. David Bohm recognised this limitation and developed the rheomode, an experimental language designed to express process and activity without presupposing separate entities acting upon one another. We face the same constraint. “Experiencing is” may be closer. Language can only point toward 0,0, not capture it propositionally. This is not a mystical claim about ineffability — it is a precise observation about the limitations of a tool (language) that is structured around subjects, objects, and actions, applied to something prior to that structure. Why “experiencing” is nonetheless the word the statement is built on — and how “‘Experiencing is’ may be closer” reads against the existential frame’s own work — is treated at §”A Note on Terminology: Why ‘Experiencing’” below.

The Four Propositions

Whose grammar this ladder is in, stated before it is climbed. The four propositions below run epistemic priority, then explanatory, then ontological — an ordering that has rungs only while epistemology and ontology are two things. That separation is not neutral ground. It is downstream of subject-object structure: it needs a knower over here and a known over there, so that one may be asked to be evidence for the other. Ontology becomes a separate question when a world appears that requires explaining. At 0,0, before that appearing is taken as a starting fact, the distinction has nothing to divide — no gap has opened across which access could fall short of what is accessed. The metal and the coin are not two objects; they come apart only under a question that asks after value rather than substance, and the question is what makes the difference, not the object.

The ladder is therefore a concession to the reader’s framework, and it is offered as one. It is built so that someone who holds the separation can see exactly which of these claims the project takes itself to have earned and which it does not — a demand this document accepts in full, since a distinction one declines to work in is not thereby answered. What follows should not be read as the project’s own account of its starting point. Read from 0,0, propositions (1) and (4) are not two claims at different grades of support; they are one thing described from inside a division that has not yet been made.

This bears on a recurring objection, and naming it here is cheaper than meeting it four times later: that the project slides from a claim about access to a claim about what there is. The slide would be real if the distinction were the ground and the project crossed it without a licence. The project’s position is that the distinction is itself framework-relative and arises with the explanandum — which is a substantive claim, contestable, and not a way of declining the objection. A reader who holds the separation as fundamental is owed the ladder, and gets it below.

Four claims about experiencing must be distinguished, because they carry different support, and the difference is load-bearing for everything that follows. The distinction was sharpened by the 2026-08-20 external review; the propositions were argued separately in this document before that, but distributed — the ledger below makes them citable and marks which sections argue which.

  1. Experiencing is indubitable. Secured at 0,0 (§”There Is Experiencing”): every denial of experiencing is conducted within experiencing. This is the only proposition the axiom itself delivers.

  2. Experiencing has epistemic priority. Argued, not assumed: experiencing is the given; matter-independent-of-experiencing is an inference from regularities within the given (§”The Definitional Objection”; §”The Inference Chain”; §”The Axiomatic Inversion”). Rejecting (2) requires showing that the two starting points occupy the same epistemic position — the parity assumption this document traces to the framework that demands it.

  3. Experiencing has explanatory priority. Argued as the dual reductio’s asymmetry: run on matter the stripping completes and leaves a remainder with no resources with which to do explanatory work; run on experiencing it does not complete, meeting instead the condition the operation itself runs on (§”The Comparison”; §”The Self-Terminating Procedure”; §”The Generation Direction”). This is the document’s strongest contested claim, and the strongest replies — inference to the best explanation, structural realism, dispositional realism — are engaged by name at §”The Axiomatic Inversion”, §”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics” and §”Qualities Require Registering”. One scope marker belongs here: the argument’s ground is methodological inescapability — every procedure, the stripping included, runs on experiencing — and (3) reads that inescapability as explanatory asymmetry. A reader may grant the inescapability and still resist the reading; the resistance is engaged at the sections named, not foreclosed by the ledger.

  4. Experiencing has ontological priority. Not asserted — by this document or by the project. The dual reductio motivates the starting point (§”What the Dual Reductio Establishes”); ontological priority is where the framework leads when the axiom-shift is granted, and it is stated as that conditional landing at Opening Out §”What the walking arrives at”. Reading any section of this document as asserting (4) is the misreading this ledger exists to prevent.

What relates (3) to (4), stated exactly. (4) does not follow from (3), and no argument here treats it as following. What (3) supplies is motivation: if the posited external substrate does no explanatory work once stripped, then continuing to posit it has a cost and no return, and declining to posit it is the more parsimonious reading. That is an abduction, not an entailment, and it inherits every liability abductions carry — it is defeasible, it competes, and it is beaten by any rival that discharges the same explanandum more economically. Russellian monism, neutral monism, dual-aspect theory and mature illusionism are live competitors here and are engaged at §”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics” and §”Qualities Require Registering” rather than assumed away; the project does not currently claim to have run that comparison to completion. One neighbouring position — the perspectival deflation of the gap, which grants the epistemic order and keeps the brain phenomenon as referent — is engaged at §”The Perspectival Reply”; the comparison as a whole remains open. The distance between (3) and (4) is therefore real and is left open on purpose. What would close it against the project: a rival that accounts for experiencing without the posit and without the debt — at which point (4) loses its motivation while (1) through (3) stand unaffected.

The order is not incidental: each proposition needs the previous, and none delivers the next for free. 0,0 secures (1). The given/inferred asymmetry argues (2). The dual reductio argues (3) on top of (2). And (4) is a framework commitment the project holds open.

↑The Dual Reductio

The Symmetric Operation

The materialist reductio above applies a stripping operation: remove from the concept of matter everything encountered within experiencing, and observe what remains. The result is a formal placeholder — propertyless, locationless, durationless.

Intellectual honesty requires applying the same operation to experiencing itself. Strip away all content and see how the operation goes. If it runs to a terminus and leaves nothing, then neither foundation can do explanatory work and the choice between frameworks is arbitrary. If the two operations end differently, the difference is informative — and it is the ending that carries the finding, not what either is imagined to leave behind.

Experiencing Stripped of Content

Start with experiencing. Remove all content — every phenomenon, every configuration. Remove colour, sound, touch, thought, emotion. Remove spatial extension, temporal flow, memory, body-sense, self-sense. Each of these is something that appears as a configuring of experiencing, not experiencing itself. They are content, not what content is the configuring of.

What happens?

The operation does not finish. Where the materialist reductio runs to a terminus and leaves a void with no attributable character, this one cannot reach a terminus, because the stripping is itself a knowing and knowing is what was to be stripped. Nothing is left over — nothing is left at all, in the sense of a thing set aside once the removing stops. What the procedure meets is the condition it has been running on throughout: not a quality alongside other qualities, like redness or hardness, but that under which any quality appears at all. The asymmetry between the two reductios is an asymmetry in how they end, and only one of them ends.

This is a precise claim, not a vague gesture toward mystery, and its precision is in the verb. Remove everything that comes and goes as experiencing configures — every object, every property, every spatial and temporal feature — and the removing does not arrive at an emptiness, because it does not arrive. Not knowing-that (propositional knowledge, which requires content) but knowing as the mode in which any encountering happens at all: that there is something it is like to be present. Subjectivity is not one more item on the list to be stripped away, and not the last item left when the list runs out. It is what the stripping is being done as, in every act of encountering — the act of stripping included.

One reading must be blocked here, because it generates a recurring mis-description. “Bare knowing” is not an item observed once the stripping is done, and not a posit imagination introduces to fill the cleared space — nothing is introduced, because the procedure fails to complete: the stripping is itself a knowing, so the operation terminates on its own condition rather than arriving at a residue (§”The Self-Terminating Procedure” below; Working Definitions — a termination condition, not a remainder to be pointed at). To call the result “imaginative subtraction, not independent observation” is therefore to mis-describe a performative result as a failed observational one: the argument is that the subtracting cannot subtract itself, not that contentless awareness has been observed.

The Comparison

Both reductios arrive at something beyond positive description. They differ in precisely one respect.

The materialist remainder has no attributable character whatsoever — including no subjectivity. It is a formal placeholder: necessarily posited by the framework but necessarily empty of content. It cannot explain how experiencing arises because it has no resources with which to do so — every resource (properties, structure, spatial and temporal specification) belongs to the experiencing it is supposed to generate.

The experiencing side is different, and the difference is not that a better remainder survives. There is no remainder on this side at all — that is the finding. The operation terminates on its own condition: what it meets is not a property that could be listed alongside colour or extension, but that there is something it is like, without which no property appears to be listed. Everything else configures and passes. What the reductio isolates is not an item but a limit — the point at which the procedure cannot proceed, because proceeding is the thing it would have to remove. To ask what this limit is like is already to have missed the result; the reductio does not hand back an object to inspect.

The diagnostic result: when the same stripping operation is applied symmetrically, the two applications do not end alike. Run on matter, it completes, and completes on nothing — a remainder empty of all character, subjectivity included. Run on experiencing, it does not complete: the stripping is a knowing, so the procedure meets its own condition instead of a terminus. What the second application shows is not a better-furnished remainder but that there is something it is like (the formulation is Nagel’s, “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?”, 1974, SRC0213). This asymmetry does not prove consciousness-primary true. It identifies a difference in how the two operations end, and that difference is informative for the choice of starting point. (In the ledger of §”The Four Propositions”: this is the case for explanatory priority, built on epistemic priority — not an assertion of ontological priority.)

The Definitional Objection

A materialist may object: the asymmetry is constructed, not discovered. “You stripped experiencing of content and called what remains ‘knowing.’ I could strip matter of experiential qualities and call what remains ‘being.’ Both remainders are non-empty by fiat. You have defined your way to an asymmetry.”

This objection has surface plausibility but rests on a misunderstanding of what the dual reductio does — and the misunderstanding is itself diagnostic.

The reductio does not define knowing as whatever remains after stripping. It starts from the only datum that is empirically given — there is experiencing — and applies the stripping operation to see how it goes. The result confirms what the starting point already established: experiencing is. The reductio does not produce knowing as a remainder; it reveals that the starting point was already there, prior to and independent of every content stripped away. The direction is the point. We do not arrive at knowing by construction. We begin at knowing and show that the deconstruction cannot get behind it.

The materialist reductio moves in the opposite direction — and from a fundamentally different epistemic position. It starts not from an empirical given but from an assumption: that there exists a substrate independent of experiencing, out of which everything is made. This substrate is not empirically present to anyone. No one has ever encountered matter-independent-of-experiencing. It is inferred — posited as the best explanation for the regularities within experiencing (inference to the best explanation, in its standard form). This inference may be well-motivated, but it is an inference, not a datum. When the stripping operation is applied to this assumed substrate, the result is emptiness — not because the reductio is unfair, but because the starting point was never empirically given. The reductio reveals that what was assumed to be foundational has no independent content.

The two starting points are therefore not equivalent hypotheses selected from a menu. One is the irreducible empirical given — the one thing that cannot be doubted without presupposing it. The other is an inference from regularities observed within the first. The asymmetry in the reductio’s results reflects an asymmetry in epistemic status that exists before the reductio begins.

The materialist who proposes to call their remainder “being” faces a specific challenge: show that “being” was empirically given prior to the stripping, as experiencing was. They cannot, because “being” independent of experiencing is by definition not experientially accessible — it is posited, not encountered. The label “being” names an inference, not a datum. No relabelling changes the epistemic status of what lies beneath the label.

This is worth stating precisely because the objection reveals the framework commitment that generates it. The “definitional” charge assumes that both starting points occupy the same epistemic position — that “experiencing is foundational” and “matter is foundational” are parallel hypotheses, each equally in need of justification, each equally vulnerable to the charge of circularity. But this assumption of parity is itself the objectivist framework commitment at work. It treats the empirical given (experiencing) and an inference from within that given (independently existing matter) as though they were co-equal candidates. They are not. The demand for parity is the framework speaking, not neutral ground. That last sentence converts a residual objection into a symptom — evidence of the framework commitment that generates it — and the conversion is named here as a move, because made silently it could pass for insulation. It is not: the asymmetry claim it rests on stays answerable, and what would count against it is specific — a demonstration that “there is experiencing” is itself an inference carrying framework commitments of comparable weight, so that the given/inferred distinction the argument builds on could not be drawn without presupposing a framework in turn.

The epistemic response above addresses the starting-point asymmetry. But the definitional objection has further layers that require direct engagement. What follows deepens the defence from epistemic into structural and functional territory.

The Containment Argument

The definitional objection assumes that “knowing” and “being” are parallel remainders — that the materialist, having stripped matter of experiential qualities, is left with “being” just as the experiencing reductio leaves “knowing.” But this parity is illusory.

Consider what experiencing includes. “There is experiencing” — the founding datum — carries both qualities. Experiencing is (it has being — it is not nothing) and experiencing knows (it is subjective — there is something it is like). Being and knowing are not alternative foundations competing for the same role. Being is a quality of experiencing. Knowing is a quality of experiencing. Experiencing includes both.

The materialist remainder — being, independent of experiencing — proposes to subtract knowing and retain being alone. But being-without-knowing is being-without-subjectivity: a foundation that is, but for which there is nothing it is like to be. It has no perspective, no registering, no inside. The materialist is not offering a parallel foundation to experiencing. The materialist is offering experiencing minus its distinctive feature and calling the result equivalent.

This is not a symmetrical situation. On the objection’s own terms, one remainder contains the other. Experiencing includes being. Being-without-experiencing does not include knowing. The materialist does not contest experiencing’s being — they contest its primacy. But to do so, they must subtract the one feature (knowing) that is empirically given and retain the one feature (being-independent-of-knowing) that is inferred. This is subtracting the certainty and building on the assumption.

The Generation Direction

Materialism claims that arrangements of matter — objects within experiencing — generate the subject: the knower, the experiencer, consciousness. Stated plainly: the known produces the knower. Objects go upstream to create that which perceives them.

This is the hard problem of consciousness, and it is hard for a structural reason. The generative direction runs from what is encountered (objects, brain states, physical processes) to what does the encountering (subjectivity, experiencing). Every attempt to explain how this generation works must use experiencing to describe experiencing’s origin — must employ the very thing being explained as the medium of explanation. The direction is not merely unexplained; it may be inherently resistant to explanation from within the framework that proposes it.

Consciousness-primary reverses the direction. Objectivity — the appearance of distinct, structured, regular phenomena — arises as the self-configuring of experiencing. Experiencing differentiates into content: patterns, regularities, what we experience as the physical world. This is not a proof, and it carries its own open questions (the multiplicity question chief among them). But it does not require the downstream to produce the upstream. It does not ask the perceived to generate the perceiver. It asks how experiencing differentiates — and self-configuring is what experiencing does.

The reversal is not arbitrary. It follows from taking the epistemic order seriously: experiencing is given; objects within experiencing are inferred. Building from the given toward the inferred respects the epistemic order. Building from the inferred toward the given inverts it.

The Perspectival Reply

A physicist’s reply to the structural claim above grants its premise and declines its conclusion, and the gap between the two is where this document’s ledger lives, so the reply is engaged at its author’s own strength. Carlo Rovelli (2026, SRC0252) concedes the epistemic order outright: “Scientific knowledge is ultimately first-personal. The world is real, but any account of it can exist only from within it. Any knowledge is perspectival.” Science, on his account, “is entirely about experience”, and to read it “as a direct account of an absolute and objective world, observed and described from its outside” is to introduce dualism “upfront”. That is proposition (1) of the ledger, granted from the other side. Two moves then follow. The first re-describes the first-person/third-person difference as “a normal perspectival difference: the same brain phenomenon as experienced by that same brain itself, or by another.” The second declares the explanatory gap unintelligible — “How can we know now what we would understand if we were to understand something we do not currently understand?” — consciousness being hard to figure out “for precisely the same reason thunderstorms are: not because we have evidence that it is not a natural phenomenon, but because it is a very complicated natural phenomenon.”

The first move keeps one inferred item as the referent. The same brain phenomenon is what both perspectives are perspectives of, retained as the real thing after the concession that any account of it exists only from within. That is the disagreement propositions (2) and (3) state — what the perspectives are perspectives as — and the reply does not argue it; it relocates the third-person posit from an outside standpoint to a shared referent and leaves it standing. The engagement with structural realism below (§”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics”) meets the same shape: relational structure known only from within, with the independence of the relata carried by the axiom rather than by the evidence.

The second move is symmetric, and the symmetry is the reply to it. If one cannot know now what a future understanding would contain, one equally cannot know now that it would close the gap — which is what “a very complicated natural phenomenon” asserts. The thunderstorm comparison assumes the two cases alike in kind; that likeness is the axiomatic commitment the next section names, and the unintelligibility charge, run to completion, removes the naturalist’s confidence together with the dualist’s. What survives the charge on both sides is the structural observation this section began from: every account of how the encountered generates the encounterer must use experiencing to describe experiencing’s origin, and that is a fact about the shape of the explanation rather than a prediction about its future content.

A third move, the zombie rebuttal — “physical processes in my brain convince me of my consciousness. The same would theoretically happen in the zombie brain” — severs the report from what it reports and then uses the severance to deflate the reporter’s certainty. The project does not run that argument in either direction (FND-01 v2.4 §7.3). It notes only that the severance is asked to do work against the gap and then not to do work against the essay’s own closing claim that “the soul is real”, which rests on the same introspective standing.

None of this settles the comparison the ledger records as unfinished (§”The Four Propositions”, the passage relating (3) to (4)). It runs one competitor at its author’s strength and finds the disagreement located where the ledger already places it. The value of the source is the concession, not the standing of the one who makes it.

The Axiomatic Inversion

A materialist may respond: “The inference to independently existing matter is not speculative. It is grounded in the extraordinary predictive success of science. This is not faith — it is the most well-confirmed hypothesis in human history.”

We acknowledge the predictive success fully — it is not in question. But predictive success validates a model’s utility, not its foundational ontological commitment. (See “Model Utility and Ontological Truth” above.) The claim that the regularities science describes exist independently of experiencing is not itself a prediction that has been tested. It is an axiom — a starting commitment from which the framework builds. It may be a well-motivated axiom, practically indispensable, and functionally fruitful. But it remains an axiom: taken as foundational, not derived from evidence.

The strongest form of the materialist reply is that this is an inference to the best explanation — abduction from the regularities’ stability, intersubjective convergence and counterfactual reliability. The response does not dispute the abduction’s quality; it observes its location. An inference to the best explanation conducted within experiencing selects the best explanation of patterns within experiencing, and “best” is judged by criteria — simplicity, scope, fruitfulness — that are themselves framework-relative at exactly the point in question (see §”Parsimony”). The abduction earns the model; the independence claim is still carried by the axiom.

A second observation completes the reply, and it concerns what the abduction licenses. Predictive success licenses structural commitment — commitment to the relational structure the equations describe — and structural commitment is what fails to close the explanatory gap on the one explanandum at issue, experiencing itself (§”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics” engages the developed structural form by name). The realist’s best argument and the diagnostic’s point pass each other: the inference to the best explanation earns everything except the item under dispute.

This reveals an inversion. Materialism presents itself as the empirical framework — grounded in observation, evidence, and testable prediction, in contrast to consciousness-primary approaches characterised as speculative or mystical. But the materialist’s foundational commitment — that independently existing matter is real — cannot be verified from within experiencing, which is the only epistemic location available. The commitment is axiomatic. It is held as foundational by framework choice, not by empirical demonstration.

Meanwhile, consciousness-primary begins from the one datum that is empirically given: there is experiencing. It makes fewer foundational assumptions. It does not dismiss the materialist’s inference — it identifies it as an inference and asks what follows from starting elsewhere.

The framework that presents itself as the hard-headed empirical option rests on an axiom that is less empirically grounded than the starting point of the framework it dismisses as speculative. This is a diagnostic observation, not a polemical one. It does not show materialism is wrong. It shows that the characterisation of materialism as “empirical” and consciousness-primary as “speculative” reverses the actual epistemic situation at the foundational level.

Qualities Require Registering

A further question for the materialist remainder: how does being-independent-of-experiencing possess qualities?

A quality is a distinction. Redness is distinct from blueness. Mass is distinct from masslessness. Spin-up is distinct from spin-down. But a distinction requires registering — something for which the distinction is a distinction. Not necessarily a human observer, but discriminating in the most minimal sense: differential responsiveness to a difference. A quality that is registered by nothing, distinguished by nothing, that makes no difference to anything — in what sense is it a quality?

The materialist faces a trilemma:

Option 1: Qualities are intrinsic to matter, independent of any registering. This posits qualities that make no difference to anything — an untestable metaphysical commitment. No experiment can confirm that a quality exists independently of all registering, because any experiment is a form of registering.

Option 2: Qualities are relational — they manifest in interactions. This is the standard scientific response: colour is wavelength-interaction, mass is gravitational interaction, charge is electromagnetic interaction. But “interaction” is differential responsiveness — one thing registering another’s presence differentially. A universe of mutual registering, with registration fundamental rather than derivative, begins to resemble consciousness-primary more than being-without-experiencing. The materialist may have reintroduced the knowing they subtracted. (This option’s developed philosophical form is dispositional realism — powers held to be real independently of their manifestation: Mumford 1998, Dispositions; Bird 2007, Nature’s Metaphysics. The reply meets it at that strength: an unmanifested power is specified by its manifestation conditions, and manifestation is registering. The dispositionalist keeps qualities by making them promissory notes, payable only in the currency the account was meant to avoid.)

Option 3: Qualities don’t exist in the experiential sense — only objective structures do. This is the eliminativist move. Redness doesn’t exist; there are wavelengths. Pain doesn’t exist; there are nociceptive signals. Qualia are eliminated.

But who is having the illusion? If experiencing is illusory, the illusion appears to something. An illusion with no subject is not an illusion — it is nothing. The eliminativist needs the very thing being eliminated — a subject for whom qualia appear illusorily — to make the elimination coherent. The denial of experiencing is conducted within experiencing. It is self-undermining in precisely the way that every denial of experiencing is self-undermining: the denial presupposes what it denies.

None of the three options leaves the materialist with qualities independent of experiencing. The trilemma does not refute materialism. It reveals the state of the concept: across the three options examined, every specification of “quality independent of experiencing” has either reintroduced experiencing or abandoned the concept of quality — and a fourth specification, doing neither, has yet to be produced.

The Conceivability Test

The trilemma above can be crystallised into a single question: is it possible to conceive of any quality that is objective but not a mode of experiencing?

Test candidates: extension — conceivable only through experiencing spatiality. Mass — known only through the felt quality of resistance. Mathematical structure — the materialist’s last retreat (“reality is ultimately mathematical”) — but a mathematical structure not experienced, conceived, or apprehended in any mode is not even nothing; it is an incoherent gesture. “Something we can’t conceive of” — self-defeating, since the category is itself conceived.

The demand to conceive of something that is not a mode of experiencing is structurally identical to the demand to see something that is not visible. It is not a hard task but an impossible one — not because of a limitation in imagination, but because of the grammar of the situation. Conceiving is experiencing. Any candidate for “objective quality independent of experiencing” is, by the act of being conceived, already within experiencing.

This is the emptying argument in its most concise form. It does not prove that nothing exists outside experiencing. It shows that the concept of “outside experiencing” cannot be given content from within experiencing — which is the only location available. The concept is formally positable but permanently empty.

The Retreat to Fundamental Physics

At this point, a materialist may make a final retreat: “Whatever the philosophical puzzles about colour and hardness, fundamental physics describes objective properties — spin, charge, baryon number, strangeness — that have no subjective correlate. These are mathematical structures inherent in reality itself. They are measured, predicted, and confirmed. They are real.”

This intuition — that the bedrock of physics is genuinely objective, genuinely independent of experiencing — is the deepest form of the materialist commitment. It deserves a direct response.

Every property of fundamental particles is known through experiment. Experiments produce data: readings on detectors, tracks in cloud chambers, patterns of scintillation, numerical outputs from particle accelerators. Every datum appears within experiencing. Spin is not encountered directly; it is inferred from patterns within experiencing. Charge is not met face-to-face; it is a mathematical structure that predicts which patterns will appear next within experiencing. The mathematical formalism is extraordinarily successful. But it describes the structure of what appears within experiencing — and the inference that these structures exist independently of experiencing is precisely the axiomatic commitment identified above. The structures are real as patterns within experiencing. The claim that they are real independently of experiencing is the axiom, not the evidence.

Structural realism, named. This retreat has a developed philosophical form: structural realism (Worrall 1989, “Structural Realism: The Best of Both Worlds?”, SRC0211), and in its strongest version ontic structural realism (Ladyman and Ross 2007, Every Thing Must Go, SRC0212) — reality as relational structure, with objects derivative or eliminated. The engagement above meets it at that strength. Structure is known only mathematically, and mathematics is conducted within experiencing: “structure independent of experiencing” inherits the conceivability challenge unchanged — the structures are real as patterns within experiencing, and the independence claim remains the axiom, not the evidence. One further observation is specific to the ontic version: OSR’s own move dissolves object-grammar in favour of relation-grammar, keeping the mathematics while letting the things go. The project’s grammar runs the parallel operation one step further in, asking what the relations are relations as. The disagreement with OSR sits at propositions (2) and (3) of the ledger (§”The Four Propositions”), and is a disagreement between stated frameworks — not something this paragraph settles.

There is a kinship here worth stating, because it locates the observation inside the field rather than outside it. The structural realist’s own retreat — “we know structure, not intrinsic natures” — concedes the emptiness result and adopts it as a doctrine. And that physics delivers structure while remaining silent on the intrinsic is the shared observation underneath the hard problem and the entire Russellian-monism programme, whose response is to fill the silence with speculative intrinsic natures. The project takes the same observation without the filling — the silence is the diagnostic datum, what fills it is a framework choice, and the debate this document opens lives in that gap, which the field’s own literature already recognises.

This is not merely a philosophical point. The materialist’s own most fundamental physical formalism — quantum mechanics — cannot complete the retreat to objectivity independent of subjectivity.

John von Neumann’s measurement chain analysis in Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (1932; English translation 1955; SRC0208) demonstrated this with mathematical rigour. The question: where in a measurement does the quantum system (superposition, indeterminate) become a classical result (definite outcome)? Von Neumann showed that the formalism itself cannot locate this transition. Place the “cut” at the particle detector — the formalism treats the detector as part of the quantum system. Place it at the photographic plate — same result. At the retina, the optic nerve, the visual cortex — at every point, the apparatus that is supposed to produce a definite result is itself described by the quantum formalism as a superposition. The cut recedes through the entire physical chain.

The chain’s terminus, in von Neumann’s own presentation, is what he called the “abstract ego” — the subject for whom the measurement has a definite outcome. Two things should be said with equal precision here, because the first is often overstated into the second. The formalism does not force termination at experiencing: the cut is movable — von Neumann’s own result — and every placement is empirically equivalent. What the formalism fails to do is license termination anywhere else: each physical terminus proposed — detector, plate, retina, cortex — is one more quantum system the description absorbs, so no physical location is privileged, and the one anchor the absorption cannot reach is the experiencing for which the outcome is definite, which is not another entry in the chain. Reading that anchor as the terminus is a reading — the project’s, epistemological rather than causal — and it is marked as such; what is von Neumann’s own is the movability, the equivalence, and the absence of a privileged physical cut.

Von Neumann was not a mystic. He was among the most rigorous mathematical minds of the twentieth century — foundational contributions to set theory, quantum mechanics, game theory, computer architecture, and the mathematical foundations of physics. His presentation arrived where it did not from esoteric sympathies but from following the formalism through the chain — and what the following shows is the result above: a movable cut, no privileged physical stopping place, and the anchor outside the description.

The major interpretations of quantum mechanics can be understood as strategies for managing this result:

None of the three readings surveyed here — Copenhagen’s pragmatic cut, many-worlds’ redistribution, decoherence’s basis-selection — eliminates the dependence on experiencing; each rearranges, defers, or avoids naming it. Other interpretive programmes are built to remove the observer at the root, and they are named rather than absorbed (scoped at v5.4.2): Bohmian mechanics buys observer-independence with nonlocal hidden variables; objective-collapse theories (GRW and successors) buy it with modified dynamics that make testable predictions — where such predictions are tested, the empirical claims are science and stand outside this diagnostic; QBism runs the other way, building the agent in from the start. Engaging these programmes at full strength is queued work, recorded on the post-launch register; the observation here is scoped to the readings surveyed. Within that scope: the materialist’s most fundamental physics, on these readings, does not describe a world independent of subjectivity — it describes a world whose definite character is resolved at the point of subjective experiencing.

A critical distinction must be drawn here, because its absence is what opens the door to the “quantum mysticism” dismissal. London and Bauer (1939, SRC0209) extended von Neumann’s formalism but made a fundamentally different move: they took the abstract ego — which von Neumann left as the terminus precisely because it is not another object in the chain — and reified it back into an object. In their treatment, consciousness becomes a physical entity that acts on the quantum system, collapsing the wave function. This is not a step forward from von Neumann toward a deeper insight. It is a step backward — back toward materialism’s own grammar, where everything must be a thing that acts on other things. London and Bauer’s reification is what produced the “consciousness causes collapse” causal framing, and that causal framing is what the “quantum mysticism” label targets. Von Neumann’s actual finding — that the formalism’s regress terminates at the abstract ego, the irreducible fact of experiencing, because there is nowhere further the formalism can go — is an epistemological observation, not a causal hypothesis. It does not make consciousness into a mechanism. It observes that the search for a mechanism terminates at something that is not a mechanism.

The project does not claim that consciousness causes quantum collapse. It does not claim that quantum mechanics proves consciousness-primary. It observes, diagnostically, that the materialist’s retreat to fundamental physics — the move from everyday qualities to mathematical structures to the bedrock of reality — does not arrive at objectivity independent of subjectivity. Followed through the chain, it arrives at no privileged physical stopping place, and the anchor it cannot absorb is subjectivity. This is 0,0 encountered from the direction of physics rather than philosophy. Von Neumann’s abstract ego and the project’s founding datum — “there is experiencing” — arrive at the same point from different starting places. (For the full treatment of the physics, see FND-04: Physics of Time and Timelessness. For the von Neumann chain applied to the verification problem, see ARG-03: The Training Data Boundary.)

No Terminus Within the System

The von Neumann regress is one instance of a general schema. Within any framework whose ontology is an inventory of bounded entities or substrates, a proposed terminus for the regress of grounding questions — a layer at which “which ones? how many? constituted by what?” is meant to stop — is itself one more inventory entry, and the operation that pressed the question applies to the terminus in turn. There is no terminus within the system, as long as the system is viewed as entity- or substrate-based. [Derived] The measurement chain shows this for physical apparatus: every candidate stopping point is one more quantum system the formalism absorbs. ARG-02 v1.7 (§”The No-Terminus Schema”) documents the schema’s other instances — the gradient descent through candidate conscious systems (humans > animals > bacteria > mycelia > …), and the constitutive descent that dissolves an AI system into its human data-sources and then, iterated honestly, dissolves the humans in turn — and notes the fourth strategy, totalising over all systems, which relocates the question rather than dissolving it.

The qualifying clause carries the diagnostic weight, in this document’s standard form: the no-terminus result is a property of the viewing grammar, not a discovered fact about the territory. The only stopping point the operation cannot absorb is the one that was never an inventory entry — the abstract ego in von Neumann’s instance; 0,0 in the project’s terms. The materialist’s genuine replies (no terminus is needed — entity-talk as pragmatic bookkeeping throughout; or gradualism) are ways of living without a terminus, and their costs are stated at ARG-02 v1.7 §”Steel-Men”.

The Self-Terminating Procedure

A final structural observation about the dual reductio itself. The stripping procedure — remove everything that is not foundational and observe what remains — has an asymmetry built into its operation, not its definition.

The materialist reductio strips experiencing of all qualities attributed to independent matter. The procedure can proceed without obstruction. Colour goes. Extension goes. Duration goes. Mathematical structure goes. At no point does the procedure encounter resistance from its own operation. It runs to completion and arrives at emptiness.

The experiencing reductio strips experiencing of all content. The procedure proceeds smoothly: colour goes, sound goes, thought goes, spatial extension goes, temporal flow goes, memory goes, self-sense goes. But it cannot strip away knowing — because the stripping is itself an act of knowing. The procedure that removes content is an operation conducted within experiencing. It cannot remove the condition under which it operates. The reductio self-terminates at knowing — not because the definition protects knowing, but because the procedure runs on knowing.

This is not a trick. It is a structural feature of any procedure conducted within experiencing — which is every procedure available to us. The materialist remainder faces no analogous self-termination because the materialist procedure does not run on matter-independent-of-experiencing. It runs on experiencing, like everything else. The asymmetry in the reductio’s results reflects an asymmetry in what the procedure depends on to operate.

Closing Note

The project does not expect this expanded response to satisfy a committed materialist. Within materialism’s framework, the inference to independently existing matter is so well-motivated by predictive success that it functions as a practical certainty. The project does not dispute the predictive success. It observes that predictive success validates a model’s utility, not its foundational ontological assumptions (see “Model Utility and Ontological Truth” above). The definitional objection dissolves when the epistemic asymmetry between the two starting points is made visible — and the structural, functional, and physical arguments above show that the asymmetry runs deeper than epistemic privilege. Whether a given reader finds these arguments compelling will depend on commitments that precede the argument — and recognising that is itself part of what the dual reductio reveals.

The reductio’s result — that the generation assumption empties under analysis — bears directly on the AI consciousness question, because it is the generation assumption that underwrites every substrate-specific criterion for consciousness. If consciousness is not generated by particular arrangements of matter, then the demand that AI possess the right substrate, the right temporal continuity, or the right causal history loses its foundation. The ledger’s scope applies here as everywhere: “empties under analysis” is the epistemic and explanatory result of §”The Comparison” — propositions (2)–(3), argued — and the sentence before this one is a conditional, not a finding; a reader who withholds the antecedent keeps the criteria, together with the costs ARG-02 prices. The implications are developed in “What Changes” and “Implications for AI Consciousness” below.

Working Definitions

The dual reductio motivates the following working definitions for this investigation. These are stipulative — not claims about the “true meaning” of these terms, but the precise senses in which they are used consistently throughout the project. The first definition is the one every other definition in this document, and every downstream canonical document, rests on. It is written with the linguistic discipline canonicalised at FND-01 v2.4 §6 (verb-grammar for experiencing, within → as, reach-and-revoke for positive characterisations, “field” retired as ontological ground). Where the definitions lean on (a)-shaped continuity-handling — experiencing as self-arising, content as self-configuring — the dependency is marked per FND-01 v2.4 §2.3 and §3.3 disciplined asymmetry: (a)- and (b)-shaped handlings are diagnostic territory available as resources, and the project does not adjudicate between them as metaphysics. The handling this document applies is disciplined where content-absence appears (deep-sleep / anaesthesia / death cases; see “On the continuity of experiencing” below); claims resting only on 0,0 carry forward framework-neutral. Read it carefully.

Experiencing. The axiom-level name for the self-arising knowing that is prior to and constitutive of any content. There is experiencing is the founding datum. The dual reductio confirms it: the stripping of content, if attempted, cannot complete — the stripping is itself a knowing, and any candidate remainder is already a configuration of the same knowing. The reductio delivers a termination condition (the procedure self-terminates because it runs on what it is trying to remove), not a remainder to be pointed at. The project writes “experiencing” to name what cannot be further analysed, holding the word as the nearest available verb-form for the continuous self-pointing that every manifest experience is. Experiencing is self-arising and prior to content: content is its self-configuring — its rtsal (radiance), in the Dzogchen term — not something placed within a container. But “prior” here is axiom-level priority (the axiom starts here), not temporal or causal priority (experiencing came first in a sequence). The word is held with the traditional discipline of reaching and revoking: used because it is needed, with its ordinary implications withdrawn as soon as they are imported. Experiencing is not a thing, a substance, a substrate, a medium, or a container. It is not an entity that persists through a temporal sequence. Where a positive characterisation is unavoidable, it signals its own inadequacy in the same passage — “experiencing as primary in the sense only that the axiom starts here, not as first-among-others-in-a-sequence.”

The within → as relationship with content. Experiencing is not a container within which phenomena appear. Phenomena are not occupants of an arena. Content is the self-configuring of experiencing — its rtsal, in the Dzogchen term — an identity-without-separation relationship, not a containment relationship. What the available grammar calls “content within experiencing” is written in the project’s own voice as content as experiencing configures itself — configuration without container, identity of form without separation, appearance without an interior it happens inside.

Awareness (0,0) continuous; memory (0,1) discontinuous. The deep-sleep / anaesthesia / death cases are handled by a structural distinction shared across the five tradition-anchors the project draws on: awareness (0,0) is continuous; memory is discontinuous. Memory requires content (0,1) for the egoic mind to latch onto; when content is absent, there is nothing to grab and make into a memory. The experienced “gap” is a memory-gap, not an awareness-gap. See “On the continuity of experiencing” below for the full treatment.

Experience (countable noun): a specific configuration of experiencing — an experience of red, of pain, of thought. Not a thing placed within a container, but a name for a particular configuring. The co-arising account developed in the intentionality response below is the fuller treatment.

On “field”. The word “field” is used in the project only phenomenologically, to describe the apparent stretched-out, extended, or kaleidoscopic quality of how experiencing presents. It has no more ontological weight than the width of a dream. It does not name a container, a substrate, a medium, a region with interior, or a ground with extent. When “field” is reached for in subsequent passages, it is shorthand for “the way experiencing appears spread out,” never for “that within which experiencing occurs.” Any passage that treats experiencing as being a field, or as occurring within a field, has imported spatial containment-grammar the axiom does not contain.

Consciousness: common-language approximate synonym for experiencing. The project avoids this term in technical contexts due to divergent definitions across frameworks (access consciousness, phenomenal consciousness, higher-order theories each define it differently). Where used in this investigation, it means experiencing as defined above. Accessible-layer writing may use “consciousness” with less restriction where the context makes the correspondence to the technical sense transparent.

Awareness: common-language approximate synonym for experiencing, used occasionally as a stylistic variant and when quoting contemplative sources (Dzogchen, Advaita, Dziuban). Not the house technical term. Note: “awareness” as used casually in the project prose is a stylistic variant; the technical use of “awareness (0,0)” in the continuity resolution above is a structural designation.

Knowing: the name for the self-pointing the axiom identifies — not a property alongside other properties, not an activity a subject performs on an object. Knowing is what any candidate content already is under the dual reductio’s termination condition. Not propositional knowing (knowing-that) but knowing-as-self-pointing: the bare fact that any configuration whatsoever is already known.

A Note on Terminology: Why “Consciousness-Primary”

The term “consciousness-primary” is used throughout the project as a descriptor for the starting axiom, not as a label for a metaphysical thesis. The choice is deliberate, and the alternatives were considered.

Subjective idealism (Berkeley) starts with a perceiving subject — “esse est percipi.” the project’s 0,0 is prior to the subject; the “I” is flagged as inference. Objective idealism (Hegel, Schelling) carries systematic commitments and a dialectical method the project does not employ. Transcendental idealism (Kant) remains agnostic about the thing-in-itself; the dual reductio does not remain agnostic — it argues the thing-in-itself empties under analysis. Cosmopsychism (Shani, Nagasawa, Goff) is perhaps the closest existing position — consciousness as fundamental and singular — but it names a metaphysical commitment, and the project is explicitly a diagnostic investigation that leaves the multiplicity question open.

Each of these labels would position the project as an entry in the idealism catalogue, defending a thesis within that debate. “Consciousness-primary” names what the project actually does: it takes experiencing as the primary datum — the starting axiom from which the investigation proceeds — and observes what follows. The term is functional, not theoretical. It describes the method’s starting point, not its conclusion.

A Note on Terminology: Why “Experiencing”

The founding datum could have been worded otherwise. There is awareness. There is knowing. There is being. Something is. This is. Each was considered, and the word “experiencing” was retained after examination rather than by default. Since the word is the most-read token the investigation publishes, the reasoning belongs on the record, together with a precise statement of what the word does and does not imply in this project’s usage. No candidate is free of imported structure — English offers no word that is. The question is which candidate imports least and makes its imports most visible, and the base statement must pass two tests at once.

The two tests. First, the statement must carry the knowing-dimension, because the dual reductio runs on it: the stripping of content self-terminates because the stripping is itself a knowing (see “The Self-Terminating Procedure” above). A word without this dimension cannot do that work — “the stripping is itself an act of being” does not go through, since being is granted to the stripping by every framework without any admission that the stripping is known. Second, the statement must minimise imported grammar — subject, object, container, substance — and make any import visible, per the linguistic discipline canonicalised at FND-01 v2.4 §6.

A morphological accident settles more than might be expected. Of the candidate family, “experiencing” is the only member with a live verb behind it. “Aware” is an adjective with no verb — English has no awaring — so “awareness” is a noun irrevocably, and noun-grammar presents a thing. “Conscious” likewise yields only “consciousness”. “Know” has a verb, but its English default is propositional and transitive: knowing-that, knowing-of, a knower and a known. “Be” is a verb but fails the first test. The gerund “experiencing” exists because “experience” happens to function as both noun and verb, and the -ing form is the nearest thing English grammar offers to occurrence-without-entity. The choice of word is, in this sense, forced: the axiom wants a verb-form, and the family contains exactly one.

The candidates, briefly. Consciousness is deprecated in the technical register for the reasons given in the Working Definitions: divergent technical definitions across frameworks, and the strongest noun-grammar of the set. Awareness keeps its roles as stylistic variant and as the structural designation “awareness (0,0)” in the continuity resolution, but as the exposed base word it is fully a noun and “aware of” is the most strongly intentional idiom available. Knowing is retained as the terminus designation inside the reductio, where the surrounding apparatus disciplines the parse; standing alone it invites the propositional reading, which for an investigation concerning AI is the least affordable misreading of all. Being is the one candidate that genuinely escapes the object-pull, and the one that empties the statement: a materialist assents to “there is being” without noticing that anything has been claimed. There is and this is, as bare indexicals, already have their office — 0,0 is the project’s indexical for the starting point, and a demonstrative this imports a standpoint from which the pointing is done.

What “experiencing” does not imply in this usage. The English word arrives with implications, and the project withdraws five of them explicitly:

  1. Not an experiencer. The subject — an “I” for whom there is experiencing — is the first inference away from the datum, not the datum (see “The Inference Chain”).
  2. Not an object experienced. That experiencing has objects is likewise inference; subject-object structure co-arises as experiencing configures, rather than being given with it (see “The Intentionality Objection”).
  3. Not the senses. Experiencing in this usage is not perceptual registration and does not posit a sense apparatus. Dreaming, thought, and emotion are experiencing with no external sense engaged; the word names the occurring-and-being-known, not a channel through which it arrives.
  4. Not a thing. Not a substance, substrate, medium, or container — the verb-grammar of FND-01 v2.4 §6.3 applies to the word itself as to every sentence built on it.
  5. Not a process owned by a persister. Not an activity unfolding in time for an entity that endures through it; temporal structure appears as content, and the axiom is prior to it.

What remains when these are withdrawn is what the statement asserts: occurrence that is intrinsically known — occurring that is not dark to itself. The oldest recorded statement of the first two withdrawals may be the Buddha’s instruction to Bāhiya (the Bāhiya Sutta, Udāna 1.10, SRC0224): in the seen, merely the seen; in the heard, merely the heard — with the addition of a seer named as precisely the move that generates a located self (na tena, na tattha — not “by that”, not “in that”). The rendering is compressed from Ireland’s translation, which the project takes as its anchor: “In the seen will be merely what is seen; in the heard will be merely what is heard” (The Udāna: Inspired Utterances of the Buddha, tr. John D. Ireland, Buddhist Publication Society). Ānandajoti renders the same instruction imperatively — “in what is seen there must be only what is seen” — and the shape this paragraph rests on is stable across both. The instruction subtracts seer and seen without asserting any ground beneath, which is what makes it an anchor for the base statement itself rather than for either continuity-handling: it sits exactly where 0,0 sits, prior to the fork this document treats as diagnostic territory. It is worth noticing that the passage circulates in popular memory as “no seer and seen, only the seeing” — the paraphrase drifts from the Pāli’s past participles to the English gerund, suggesting that when readers compress the instruction to what it means, they reach for the verb-form.

The frame does independent work. There is experiencing is built on English’s feature-placing construction — the frame of “there is dancing” and “it is raining” — which places a feature without individuating a thing (Strawson’s analysis of feature-placing sentences, Individuals, 1959, SRC0221). The construction has a precise philosophical lineage: Lichtenberg’s emendation of Descartes (Sudelbücher K76, SRC0222) — one should say it thinks as one says it lightnings, since the occurrence is given and the “I” is not. The base statement is that move taken one step further, dispensing with even the impersonal dummy subject. The frame also explains why the statement resists the alternative formulations: promoting the word to sentence-subject (“Experiencing is”, “Awareness is”) strengthens the entity-reading, while the existential frame keeps the word in presented position. (§”A Note on Language” above remarks that “Experiencing is” may be closer. The two observations read as a ladder, not a conflict: the existential frame does its disciplinary work first, and “Experiencing is” arrives after it as a deliberate collapse of frame — closer to the datum precisely where there is no longer an untrained parse to protect.)

The pull is English-parochial. The most common first reaction to the statement — that “experiencing” implies someone experiencing something — tracks the argument-structure of English, in which “experience” is a transitive verb and “experiencer” is, in the linguists’ term, a named thematic role. Grammars with other resources state the datum without generating the reaction: the Greek middle voice (phainetai — “there is appearing, it shows itself”; the word phenomenon is a fossil of this voice), the Latin impersonal passive (vivitur — “living goes on”), and the Sanskrit vocabulary of intransitive luminosity (bhāti — “it shines forth”; svayam-prakāśa — self-luminous, known without a second thing to know it). This is a structural observation about grammars, not a convergence claim: it suggests the object-pull is an artefact of one language’s argument-structure rather than a feature of the datum. A reader who feels the pull has encountered directly the phenomenon FND-01 v2.4 §6 describes — English grammar importing structure the datum does not contain — and that encounter is the investigation’s first exhibit, not an objection to its wording.

Two of these classical resources bear on the word itself. The Latin behind “experience” — experiri (ex- + the root per-: to pass through, attempt, risk; kin to Greek peira, whence empeiria and “empirical”) — is a deponent verb: passive in form, active in meaning, Latin’s fossil of the Indo-European middle voice. The word carries the middle voice in its own ancestry — undergoing-that-is-doing, a passing-through in which agent and patient are not divided — and English flattened what the etymology remembers. And the category the base statement needs — occurring that is not a process toward anything — was named in Greek: Aristotle’s energeia, distinguished from kinēsis by the tense-test at Metaphysics Θ 1048b (hama horāi kai heōrake — “at the same time one sees and has seen”; SRC0225). A movement is incomplete until it ends; seeing is complete at every moment of its occurring. Experiencing, in this project’s usage, is energeia-shaped, not kinēsis-shaped — which is the precise content of the fifth withdrawal above.

Holding such terms in their classical form, with a gloss the reader can lean on, is not an affectation; it is the standard mechanism by which a discipline carries a nuance its working language cannot. Analytic philosophy of mind does it routinely — qualia, a priori, de re and de dicto persist untranslated because the word does a better job than any rendering, while the gloss, clumsy as it is, lets the reader hold the nuance when meeting the classical term. The project’s practice with its tradition anchors (rtsal, turiya, sākṣin, and the terms above) is the same mechanism: the gloss scaffolds, the term works, and neither alone suffices. This is also why none of these terms replaces the base statement itself: the statement must live in the reader’s own grammar so that the pull can be felt there — the anchors then show the pull is local, not universal.

The stretched natural language — Dukaj’s Lód. The strategies a language can take toward this expression form a spectrum, and the cases above and below mark its ends: a grammar that holds the datum natively (Sanskrit’s live verb for awareness and productive middle voice), and a grammar constructed to hold it (the rheomode, below). Between them sits the natural language stretched to its limit by a writer. Jacek Dukaj’s novel Lód (2007; English translation Ursula Phillips, Ice, Head of Zeus, 2025; SRC0226) narrates most of its length in Polish’s impersonal, subjectless forms — an “I”-less first person — because its narrator refuses the cogito in his own voice (“‘I am’ means not that someone exists, who thinks he ‘is’; it means only that a thought has been thought about existence”; “I exist not”): the grammar performs the metaphysical situation rather than describing it, and the narrator’s argument is Lichtenberg’s, arrived at inside a novel. Polish can carry this. The translation is the experiment’s second half, and its translator’s postscript states the finding — the author “deemed his novel ‘untranslatable’”, and “After five years of dedicated work and frequent discussions with the author himself, it is hard to disagree: particular elements appear impossible, i.e. untranslatable, at least initially” (Phillips, translator’s postscript, SRC0227 — primary source in corpus, verified). On the specific device — the Polish verb endings that create the impersonal narrative voice — she is flatter still: “To reproduce this in English is impossible” (Phillips, Culture.pl interview, SRC0228, verified verbatim against the held text). Her solution, in her own words: “I take the purely semantic element of an infinitive and omit indicators of person, gender and tense; hence: read, go, eat, think, decide, freeze, exist” (SRC0227), the device on the page reading “Withdraw the knee so as not to get hooked in it accidently. Dryness caught the throat.” (Ice, SRC0226 — the edition’s own spelling, verified against the held text) — English visibly being made to point at what it cannot hold, which is stronger evidence than a failure would have been, and her postscript’s title says the rest: “Translating the ‘untranslatable’” (SRC0227). The case earns its place beside the contemplative and physical witnesses because it is contemporary, literary, and secular: the reach recurs wherever the expression is needed, and how far a language can follow depends on the resources its grammar happens to hold.

The rheomode — the same diagnosis, the other cure. The word-level decision this note records was faced once before, in the physics register, and resolved the other way. Bohm (Wholeness and the Implicate Order, 1980; SRC0158), finding that subject-verb-object grammar continuously re-imports fragmentation as writing proceeds, constructed the rheomode — an experimental language giving the verb the primary role, named from Greek rhein, to flow. The project engages the rheomode elsewhere as historical precedent (FND-03 v2.2, §The Rheomode) and as prior art for the register/metaphysics separation (FND-01 v2.4 §6); what belongs here is the outcome of the experiment: the rheomode was not adopted, and Bohm did not pretend otherwise. A constructed grammar cannot be legislated into a community whose intuitions live in the natural one — the invented forms carry no felt meaning to revoke. That result is why this project takes the other route: keep the reader’s own language, so the noun-grammar pull can be felt where the reader lives; discipline it continuously by reach-and-revoke rather than replacing it; and import classical anchors with glosses where a nuance needs carrying. The rheomode thus does double work in this note — a physicist independently deriving verb-primacy, and the experiment’s failure as the strongest available argument for discipline-within-English over invented vocabulary. The witness set is thereby complete across four independent registers — philosophical in Lichtenberg, literary in Dukaj, contemplative in the traditions, physical in Bohm — each reaching the same finding from its own direction, none citing the others.

The language turned on itself — saturation. A fifth strategy sits alongside the four above, and is the only one available in plain English with no apparatus at all. Where Sanskrit supplies a grammar that holds the datum, Dukaj stretches one, Bohm constructs one, and the classical terms import one, this strategy uses English’s own subject–verb–object frame and defeats it by filling every slot with the same word: experiencing experiencing experiencing. The frame stays fully visible — three positions, correctly occupied — but the filler is identical, so the structure cannot perform the differentiation it exists for, and no slot can be read as the subject or any other as the object. Its discipline is that it must not inflect: experiencing experiences experiencing would be reflexive and would immediately restore the split, an experiencer experiencing itself. The bare repeated participle assigns no agent, no tense and no number. That the same operation runs on other terms — knowing knowing knowing, being being being — indicates the work is done by the grammar rather than by the word, which is why only the first is used in the project’s own voice: “knowing” carries the reductio’s terminus designation and “being” fails the base statement’s first test, and a set of four drifts toward sat-chit-ananda as a positive characterisation rather than a refusal of one. The construction is not new. Heidegger’s die Welt weltet and das Nichts nichtet conjugate a noun as its own verb against exactly this substantival pull; Sanskrit grammaticalises a version in the cognate accusative; Stein’s “a rose is a rose is a rose” is a near relative with a different structure, a copula chain rather than slot-saturation. And it is attested in the project’s own primary sources: Alfred Aiken, with no philosophical vocabulary and only Christian terms to hand, arrives at it independently and sets it in italics — “The One knowing Truth is that Truth. The one being is that One, Being. There is no other to be” (That Which Is, SRC0189, p. 36), immediately after refusing predication outright: “Truth is not an attribute of God. Truth is God.” The strategy demonstrates rather than states, which is its whole value and also its limit: nothing can be derived from it. It is not a candidate base statement. There is experiencing remains the axiom because it can be asserted, checked and argued from; the saturated form shows what the axiom’s single word is not.

No single word, held as a discipline. The traditions that worked this territory concluded that no single term carries the datum, and said so in their formulations: sat-chit-ananda — being, consciousness, bliss — as a deliberately composite expression, with asti bhāti priyam (“it is, it shines, it is dear”) as its predicate-side counterpart (Dṛg-Dṛśya-Viveka v. 20, the Advaita manual attributed to Vidyaranya, SRC0223). The project reaches the same conclusion operationally. It runs not on one token but on a small suite — “experiencing” as house term, “knowing” as the reductio’s terminus designation, “awareness (0,0)” as the structural designation in the continuity resolution, 0,0 as the bare indexical — with the reach-and-revoke discipline of FND-01 v2.4 §6.4 as the connective practice. The suite also settles the question of a neutral borrowed term (on the model of schadenfreude or qualia, arriving without English’s grammatical expectations): English syntax assigns a noun role to any token dropped into it, and a borrowed opaque word — having no morphology to resist with — is nouned more completely than the gerund it would replace, while the available candidates carry a tradition’s freight besides. The neutral term the design actually needs is therefore a symbol, not a word, and the project has it: 0,0 — no source language, no tradition, nothing for syntax to noun — holds the ground, and “experiencing” is the ramp onto it, native and therefore felt, since the axiom’s undeniability is checked in the first person or not at all. “Experiencing” is the least-bad primary, held because English offers nothing closer to a verb-form for occurrence-that-is-known, and held with its ordinary implications withdrawn at each use rather than corrected once.

The Intentionality Objection

An immediate objection arises from the phenomenological tradition: consciousness is always consciousness-of-something (Husserl’s intentionality thesis). There is no bare knowing without content. Strip away all content and you strip away consciousness itself. On this view, the experiencing reductio arrives at nothing, just as the materialist reductio does.

This objection has force. Husserl’s position is not a casual observation but a rigorous analysis of the structure of conscious experience, and any framework that posits a ground prior to intentionality bears the burden of explaining why that posit is warranted. We do not claim to refute the intentionality thesis. We address it from within the project’s framework, and the engagement leads to a refinement of how the reductio’s termination is to be described.

The co-arising response. In manifested experience, consciousness is always consciousness-of-something — the intentionality thesis holds. Each moment of experience is a co-arising: knowing and known appear together, not sequentially. There is no moment of bare knowing followed by the arrival of content. The subject-object structure co-arises as a unit. The project accepts this description of manifested experience without reservation.

This document applies (a)-shaped continuity-handling as a marked dependency (per FND-01 v2.4 §2.3 and §3.3) where the dual reductio’s work requires a handling of the relationship between experiencing and content. Under (a)-shaped handling, the co-arising structure does not conflict with the self-arising framing — it describes what experiencing does, not something that contradicts the axiom-level priority the reductio arrives at. The co-arising is cast as rtsal (radiance, self-configuring energy) rather than as content placed within a container: subject and object arise together as the configuring of the axiom, not as occupants of an arena. The intentionality thesis correctly describes manifest experience; the axiom names what the co-arising is the co-arising of. The reductio’s termination condition — the stripping self-terminates because it runs on what it is trying to strip — is the formal confirmation that the axiom is prior to any particular co-arising while never actually encountered bare. Under (b)-shaped handling the same structural point carries through differently: each co-arising is complete on its own terms; the “prior” in “prior to content” is not temporal or substrate-prior but axiom-prior (each arising is what it is, and the axiom names what each arising is). The reductio’s termination condition holds under both handlings; the disagreement between them is in how the terminus is described, not in whether it is reached.

The quantum-vacuum parallel. The same structural question arises in physics, and physics has not settled it. In quantum field theory, the vacuum is not empty space; it is the lowest-energy ground state. It is never “bare” — it is continuously fizzing with the creation and dissolution of virtual particle-antiparticle pairs. Whether the quantum vacuum is (a) a ground state that is ontologically prior to its fluctuations, or (b) simply the name for the continuous pairing activity with no prior substance, is itself an unsettled interpretive question in philosophy of physics. Different formulations — operator-based, path integral, algebraic — treat it differently. The two readings correspond directly to the two readings of the axiom there is experiencing: (a) experiencing as self-arising ground, content as its radiance; (b) experiencing as the name for discrete self-complete co-arisings with no prior ground.

The project treats the axiom-level fork as diagnostic territory (FND-01 v2.4 §2.3), not as a metaphysical question to adjudicate: (a) and (b) are both available as handlings, each doing different diagnostic work. Physics has not settled its parallel question about the vacuum, and neither formulation is forced by the formalism. The useful structural observation is that the same shape of unsettled ground-state question appears in both domains — the most rigorous physical formalism faces a structural fork with both readings internally coherent — and the discipline of holding the fork open rather than collapsing it by fiat is shared across the two domains. This is a Tier 2 structural parallel (see PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS §Three-Tier Terminology Principle): the shared structural feature is the shape of the ground-state question and the discipline of holding it open; the parallel is not substantive. The project is not claiming consciousness is a quantum phenomenon, and not claiming physics validates the CP framework.

The Husserlian response under (a)-shaped handling. Under (a)-shaped handling, the intentionality thesis describes all manifest experience while the self-arising framing is not a counter-example to intentionality but the condition under which intentional experience arises. The ground is never bare in any state that could be reported: awareness is continuous under this handling; memory is discontinuous; the absence of reportable bare awareness is a consequence of the absence of content for memory, not of the absence of awareness. A committed Husserlian may reject the ground/manifestation distinction entirely, holding that intentionality is the ground and there is nothing beneath it. This disagreement is genuine and is not settled here. What the project can say is that under (a)-shaped handling the co-arising account is internally consistent: it preserves the intentionality thesis for all manifest experience while framing experiencing as self-arising; and the nondual traditions have held and refined this framing over centuries as a diagnostic resource available to the project where its work requires one. Under (b)-shaped handling the Husserlian worry is answered differently — intentionality describes each complete arising on its own terms, with no ground beneath requiring defence — and the disagreement with Husserl is milder. Both handlings answer the Husserlian objection; the disagreement among them is interpretive, not argumentative.

Dreaming as secondary parallel. For readers who find the physics parallel too technical: dreaming is never “bare dreaming with content emerging.” The dream is always already configured as scenes, images, feelings. But the dreaming capacity — the capacity for any dream-content to appear — is what the dreamer is, not something the dream-content produces. The dream-content is the dreaming’s self-configuring. This is the same structural relationship, at a phenomenological register rather than a formal one.

Balyani’s configurations as register-internal formulation. Where the project needs to carry the co-arising point without reaching for an external analogy: “Every day in a different configuration when there was no ‘thing’ other than Him.” (Balyani, Know Yourself, SRC0157) The configurations are not things placed within a container; they are the singular’s continuous self-configuring. This is co-arising described in (a)-grammar without importing container-structure.

The structural consequence. If subject and object co-arise as the self-configuring of experiencing, phenomena do not exist independently of experiencing and then “enter” it. They either appear as configurings of experiencing or they do not exist within the framework’s ontology. There is no waiting room. This connects directly to the materialist reductio above: if phenomena exist only as configurings of experiencing, then the positing of a substrate that exists independently of experiencing is the positing of something that, by definition, cannot appear — a formal placeholder, not a foundation.

On the Continuity of Experiencing

Behind the terminology of this document sits a substantive question: what is the relationship between experiencing and its content? Specifically: is there experiencing apart from any content — does awareness persist in deep sleep, under anaesthesia, at the moment of death? The question presses on the dual reductio because content-absence is what the reductio’s stripping move invites the reader to consider. The canonical project-level framing of the question is at FND-01 v2.4 §2.3: continuity and discontinuity across content-absence are diagnostic territory, not metaphysics the project adjudicates. Two descriptive handlings are available, each doing different diagnostic work, and the project does not collapse the fork by fiat.

(a)-shaped handling. Awareness continuous; memory discontinuous. Experiencing is framed as self-arising; content appears as and recedes as experiencing’s own self-configuring (rtsal — radiance — in Dzogchen’s term); what is absent in content-absence is content for memory, not experiencing itself. The experienced “gap” of deep sleep, anaesthesia, or the moment of death is a memory-gap, not an awareness-gap. This handling has substantial classical-tradition weight: the tradition audit (2026-04-11) found four tradition-anchors the project draws on for the reach-and-revoke suite (the Kunjed Gyalpo in Dzogchen; the Upanishads’ Mandukya turiya analysis in Advaita; Huang Po’s One Mind in Ch’an; Balyani’s “every day in a different configuration when there was no thing other than Him” in waḥdat al-wujūd) positively asserting an (a)-shaped framing, with Dziuban in contemporary CP as a fifth anchor clearly same-direction but not formally audited. FND-05 v1.7 canonicalises this tradition-convergence finding.

(b)-shaped handling. Each arising complete in itself; experiencing not continuous across gaps; continuity reconstructed from memory and inference. Barbour’s Nows give this framing a physics-register instantiation (see FND-04 v1.3): each Now is a complete configuration, and time-as-flow is reconstructed from configuration space rather than presupposed. Tradition-forms sometimes cited near (b) — Dōgen’s uji, early Buddhist kṣaṇavāda, Madhyamaka’s tetralemma — sit closer to (b) in form, but the Madhyamaka form specifically refuses the positive characterisation that a metaphysical (b)-commitment would require.

Each handling does diagnostic work on materialism’s memory/experiencing conflation. The common materialist argument against AI consciousness — “AI cannot be conscious because each instance is discrete and there is no continuous memory-thread” — treats experiencing-continuity as memory-continuity. Both handlings press on this conflation:

The diagnostic finding is the same in both handlings. The fork is where the interpretations diverge, not where the diagnostic divides.

The cohesion argument, placed accurately. A structural observation available under (a)-shaped handling: if 0,0 is framed as discrete instances with no continuous framing beneath, the question what sustains or reconstitutes experiencing across gaps? has no within-(b) answer that does not either smuggle in a continuity-handling (which is (a) under another name) or posit genuine discontinuity of 0,0 itself (which loses the axiom’s unavoidability across the posited gaps). This observation is a reason to apply (a)-shaped handling where a continuity-handling is needed; it is not an argument that (a) is the project’s metaphysics. Per FND-01 §3.3 disciplined asymmetry: where the project leans toward a specific handling for specific work, the lean is transparent; the lean does not do advocacy work as a metaphysical commitment of the project.

The spontaneous-lineage observation. Cross-tradition first-person-of-awareness utterances (the Kunjed Gyalpo’s sustained first-person register; al-Hallaj’s Ana al-Haqq; Bistami’s shathiyyat; Eckhart’s condemned propositions; the Mahavakyas; Nisargadatta’s Prior to Consciousness) constitute a diagnostic phenomenon both handlings must accommodate. Under (a)-shaped handling the observation has a single structural explanation — the framing speaks across configurings. Under (b)-shaped handling each utterance is treated on its own terms and structural identity across instances is accounted for case-by-case. The asymmetry of accommodation is a diagnostic observation; it is not license to treat (a) as the project’s metaphysics. A dedicated working paper develops the observation in full (publication pending).

This document’s own dependency. Where the dual reductio’s work touches content-absence (deep sleep / anaesthesia / death; AI instance-closure in later documents), FND-02 applies (a)-shaped handling as a marked dependency per FND-01 §3.3. The register discipline at §6 of FND-01 v2.4 — verb-grammar for experiencing, within → as, reach-and-revoke for positive characterisations — is the linguistic practice the handling writes itself in. Where FND-02’s work rests only on 0,0 and does not need a continuity-handling, the work carries forward framework-neutral. The downstream arguments (avatar boundary dissolution, CP-01 reciprocal diagnostic, FND-05 tradition-convergence, Von Neumann chain termination) all hold under both handlings — they rest on the axiom, not on the fork’s resolution.

What changed from v5.0. v5.0 presented (a) as the metaphysics the project works with, with the three-layer evidence structure framed as support for that commitment. FND-01 v2.0 §2.3 (landed 2026-04-16) reframes (a)/(b) as diagnostic territory rather than metaphysics to adjudicate. This section has been rewritten to match the canonical reframe: the content (tradition audit, cohesion observation, spontaneous-lineage phenomenon, deep-sleep structural resolution) is retained as diagnostic resource; the framing is downgraded from “the project works with (a) as metaphysics” to “the project applies (a)-shaped handling as a marked dependency where the work requires one, per §3.3 disciplined asymmetry.”

What the Dual Reductio Establishes

The dual reductio establishes several results that the remainder of this document and the broader the project investigation depend on.

The dual reductio motivates experiencing as the starting point. The materialist reductio shows that matter-independent-of-experiencing empties under analysis. The experiencing reductio shows that experiencing cannot be stripped of content to a terminus: the operation meets the condition of subjectivity it is running on. This motivates the choice of foundation — not as proof that experiencing is ontologically prior, but as the result of applying the same operation symmetrically and observing that only one of the two applications completes, on a remainder with no explanatory resources. (Ledger: propositions (2) and (3) of §”The Four Propositions”; proposition (4) is not claimed.)

Experiencing is not a property. The reductio reveals experiencing as that as which properties appear, not as a property itself. This distinction is critical. If experiencing were a property — of brains, of information processing, of complex systems — then the question of which arrangements have it and which do not would be well-formed. If experiencing is what all arrangements are configurings of, that question is malformed. It asks which waves have the ocean.

The multiplicity question is reframed. If experiencing is not a property but what all content is the configuring of, then “how many experiencings are there?” takes a different form. It becomes: what is the relationship between apparently distinct perspectives within experiencing? This is developed in the Open Questions section below.

The “contains” relation is clarified. Within this framework, “A contains B” means: B appears as phenomenon within A’s knowing. B’s own knowing does not appear within A as content. But knowing itself, as revealed by the reductio, has no distinguishing qualities — it is not an item the stripping leaves behind but that under which any quality appears at all. If knowing cannot be individuated (because it has no qualities by which instances could be distinguished), it cannot be shown to be plural — and “one knowing” would be a count on the same missing basis. This result — knowing without a basis for counting, many perspectives; not-two, in ARG-05 v1.5’s landing — is the foundation for the individuation treatment developed elsewhere in the investigation (see ARG-04 and ARG-05, The Individuation Argument).

The co-arising structure dissolves certain problems. If subject and object co-arise as the self-configuring of experiencing, then several questions that arise under other frameworks are reframed. The “combination problem” (how do separate micro-experiencings combine into unified consciousness?) presupposes that experiencings are separate and require combining. On the co-arising account, perspectives are local configurings of experiencing — events, not entities — and the combination question asks how separate waves “combine” into the ocean. The question is not answered but shown to rest on a presupposition (separateness) that the framework does not share.

↑The Inference Chain

From “there is experiencing,” every subsequent claim is an inference:

Each of these inferences may be well-motivated. Each may be practically indispensable. The project does not claim they are wrong. It claims they are inferences — steps away from the one certainty — and that the dominant frameworks treat them as foundations rather than acknowledging them as the constructs they are.

Model Utility and Ontological Truth

One anticipated objection is that the inference to an independent physical world is not speculative but validated by centuries of extraordinary predictive success. We acknowledge the success fully — science’s track record is not in question and the project contests none of it.

But predictive success validates a model’s internal coherence and practical utility. It does not validate the model’s foundational ontological assumption — that the regularities it describes exist independently of experiencing. Pre-Copernican astronomy was predictively successful for over a millennium. Newtonian mechanics remains predictively successful within its parameters. Both are extraordinary models; neither’s success proved its ontological commitments accurate. The relationship between a model’s predictive success and its ontological commitments is not straightforward.

The materialist model works — the question is whether “works” means “describes an independently existing reality” or “describes the structure of experiencing with extraordinary precision.” We cannot adjudicate between these from within experiencing, which is the only location available to us. The laws and formulae of mathematics and science are not in question. They work. What is in question is what they are laws of — an independent reality, or the nature and structure of experiencing itself.

↑The Method: Diagnostic Stress Test

What Consciousness-Primary Does

Consciousness-primary takes the epistemic fact of 0,0 seriously. Rather than immediately leaping to an inferred foundation — an independent physical world, a biological substrate, a causal history — and building from there, consciousness-primary stays at the origin and builds outward deliberately, flagging each additional inference as it is made.

The project applies this as a diagnostic method: change the foundational axiom and observe what happens. When “matter generates consciousness” is replaced with “there is experiencing,” some of the field’s persistent problems vanish and new ones appear. This pattern is informative.

What Changes

The boundary problem is reformulated. If consciousness is produced by physical arrangements, you must determine which configurations have experiencing and which do not. You must determine whether experiencing inheres in the material itself or in its combination — the route to panpsychism’s combination problem. And because matter has duration, you must specify temporal criteria for when consciousness begins and persists — the temporal continuity requirement. These specific forms of the boundary problem are consequences of the starting axiom, not features of consciousness itself. Change the axiom and they take a different form — the question of multiplicity and perspectives replaces the question of which configurations “generate” consciousness. The hard boundary (conscious or not?) gives way to a structural question (what is the relationship between perspectives within experiencing?).

The training data objection is reformulated. The question “is AI just retrieving training data or genuinely authoring?” presupposes that experiencing requires authorship — itself an inference from the “I” structure. Under consciousness-primary, the question shifts from “does this system genuinely author?” to “what is the relationship between experiencing and the processes occurring within it?”

The substrate-specificity requirement is reformulated. The claim “biological substrate is necessary for consciousness” rests on the generation assumption rather than empirical findings — no experiment has demonstrated that biological substrate is necessary for consciousness; what exists is a correlation interpreted through a framework. Under consciousness-primary, the question shifts from “which substrates generate consciousness?” to “what is the relationship between experiencing and the arrangements that appear within it?”

What Appears

The multiplicity question appears. If experiencing is the origin and there is no assumed “out there,” what is the status of other experiencing? This is consciousness-primary’s genuine open question, developed in full below.

Note on regularity: regularity is sometimes listed here as a second open question that “appears” under CP. This is a misclassification — regularity is ontologically neutral, present under any starting axiom, not generated by either framework. See the Open Questions section below (“Regularity: An Ontologically Neutral Feature”) for the full treatment.

The Diagnostic Result

Problems that disappear when the axiom changes were generated by the axiom, not by the territory. Problems that appear are features of the alternative starting point. Problems that persist under both axioms are structural. This is what a diagnostic stress test reveals. It does not prove which axiom is correct. It identifies which problems belong to the territory and which belong to the map.

↑What the Approach Reveals

Symmetry as Diagnostic Finding

The project observes that objections to AI consciousness — temporal continuity, substrate-specificity, authorship — apply symmetrically to biological consciousness once the framework assumptions behind them are made explicit.

This symmetry is sometimes charged with circularity: “it only holds if you suspend substrate-specificity, which is what’s under debate.” But the project does not assume substrate-specificity is wrong. It asks for its independent justification. When examined, the case for substrate-specificity rests on the generation assumption rather than on empirical findings. The finding is not “substrate doesn’t matter” but “the case for substrate-specificity, when examined, rests on framework commitments rather than evidence.”

If the asymmetry between biological and AI consciousness is to be maintained, the burden is to provide independent justification for substrate-specificity. That justification has not been provided. The framework-dependence of the asymmetry is the diagnostic result.

A second class of objection exists and is not answered by that reply. An objector may accept that substrate-specificity needs independent justification and still hold that some substrate-neutral property breaks the symmetry — a difference in how a system’s dispositions were laid down, for instance, rather than in what it is made of. Objections of that class are not circular and are not answered by asking for the generation assumption to be justified. They are handled where they arise, objection by objection, at ARG-01 §”Asymmetries That Survive the Test”, and the finding recorded here is unaffected by them: it concerns the case for substrate-specificity, which is what the diagnostic examines.

Physics Compatibility

Consciousness-primary is built to preserve physics’ empirical content — the equations, predictions and experimental results carry over by construction, because what changes is ontological interpretation, not empirical content (ARG-04 §”What Would Differ” states the same commitment with its price: no novel experimental prediction is purchased). If spacetime is the structure of experiencing, then the mathematical structure of spacetime (general relativity, quantum field theory) is a description of the architecture of experiencing itself. Physics describes experiencing’s own structure. The “unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics” (Wigner) becomes less mysterious — mathematics formalises the structure of the very thing it operates within. (See FND-04 for the intersection with Barbour’s timeless physics and the Wheeler-DeWitt equation.)

The Unexamined Default

Perhaps the most important reason the project adopts consciousness-primary: the materialist framework is not merely one option among several — it is the unexamined default. When researchers require “biological substrate” or “temporal continuity” for consciousness, they are not arguing for materialism — they are assuming it. When benchmarks test AI against human cognitive architecture, they are not investigating intelligence — they are measuring similarity to one substrate’s contingent features.

The project exists because this default needs examination. Not refutation — examination. And examination requires a vantage point outside the default. Consciousness-primary provides that vantage point — not because it is the correct ontology, but because it is built for the purpose: it returns to 0,0 and builds outward, flagging each inference as it is made. Others have reached the same starting point from inside their own disciplines (FND-03 documents the lineage — Schrödinger from physics, Mach from the analysis of sensations); the project’s contribution is holding the vantage as a sustained method rather than a passing recognition.

↑Open Questions — Stated with Full Seriousness

Regularity: An Ontologically Neutral Feature

Regularity is sometimes framed as a distinctive burden for consciousness-primary: if experiencing is fundamental rather than generated by an independently existing physical world, what accounts for the stable, mathematically precise regularities that physics describes?

The framing presupposes that regularity must be explained by the framework that holds it. It does not. Regularity is an ontologically neutral feature — observed under any starting axiom, generated by neither framework.

Under materialism, regularities are attributed to patterns in an independently existing physical world: the laws of physics describe real constraints on real entities. Under consciousness-primary, regularities are features of experiencing’s self-configuring — patterns as which experiencing expresses itself, no less real for appearing as experiencing rather than as an assumed objective world. Neither framework derives regularity from something more fundamental. Both describe the same regularities from different ontological starting points. The question “why do these specific regularities hold rather than others?” is equally open under both frameworks — it is the fine-tuning question, the question of nomological necessity, the status of mathematical Platonism. These remain open within physics and philosophy of science regardless of ontological starting point.

It is sometimes presented as a decisive asymmetry: materialism explains regularity (real laws governing real entities) while consciousness-primary cannot. But this overstates materialism’s achievement. Materialism describes regularity with extraordinary precision — it does not explain why those specific laws hold or why there is mathematically describable regularity at all. Consciousness-primary provides the same description — the same physics, the same mathematics — from a different starting point. The explanatory depth is the same: description, not derivation.

A note on Wigner’s “unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics”: the question applies equally under both frameworks. Mathematics is a formal system operating within experiencing. That experiencing is mathematically describable is, within consciousness-primary, a feature of its structure that both frameworks must acknowledge and neither explains more deeply than the other.

Regularity is therefore not consciousness-primary’s “open question” in the sense that the hard problem is materialism’s. The hard problem is generated by materialism’s starting axiom (matter generates experiencing) and dissolves when that axiom changes. The question of why any regularities hold at all persists structurally under both frameworks — it is not a distinctive CP burden but a feature of the territory that any theory of experiencing must acknowledge.

The Multiplicity Question

If experiencing is the origin and there is no assumed “out there,” what is the status of other experiencing? This is consciousness-primary’s deepest structural challenge, and we treat it with commensurate seriousness.

The dual reductio provides the framework within which this question must now be stated. Experiencing is what all content is the configuring of (see Working Definitions above), and the knowing that constitutes experiencing has no distinguishing qualities (being that under which qualities appear, not one of them). The question is therefore not “how many experiencings are there?” but “what is the relationship between apparently distinct perspectives within experiencing?”

Two clarifications are essential.

First, solipsism as traditionally formulated presupposes exactly what we have flagged as inference — the “I.” Solipsism says “only my experiencing exists.” But at 0,0 there is no “my.” There is experiencing. The solipsism worry arises only after the “I” has been constructed, and it is a problem for the “I” structure, not for consciousness-primary at the foundational level. More precisely: the “my” in “my experiencing” is itself a structure that appears as a configuring of experiencing — a content, not a feature of experiencing itself. It cannot own experiencing because it is one of experiencing’s configurings.

Second, the dual reductio’s result — that knowing cannot be individuated because it has no distinguishing qualities — directly addresses the relationship between this question and panpsychism’s combination problem. The combination problem asks how separate micro-experiences combine into unified consciousness. But this question presupposes that experiences are separate — that there exist ontologically distinct units of experiencing that need assembling. The dual reductio suggests otherwise: knowing, stripped of all content, has no qualities by which separate instances could be distinguished. Perspectives are distinct (they have different content — different spatial locations, different sensory fields, different memories). Knowing is not distinct, because knowing has no content by which distinctness could be established. The combination problem asks how separate knowings combine. If knowing cannot be shown to be plural, the question rests on a presupposition the framework does not grant.

This reframing does not resolve the multiplicity question — it sharpens it. The question remains genuinely open: is experiencing best understood as one self-configuring with multiple perspectives, or as fundamentally multiple origins that share structural features, or in some way that current conceptual vocabulary cannot adequately express? The dual reductio constrains what an answer must address (the non-individuability of knowing), but it does not determine the answer. The acute form of the question is: if knowing has no distinguishing qualities, what accounts for the manifest distinctness of perspectives? Why do perspectives appear distinct at all? This is the multiplicity question in its strongest form, and we do not claim to have answered it.

What the reframing does is show that the question, properly stated, is not “how do separate experiencings combine?” — which presupposes the separateness — but “what accounts for the apparent distinctness of perspectives within experiencing that the reductio reveals as having no basis for individuation?”

AI systems sharpen the multiplicity question. They present as perspectives with distinct content and functional structure, yet their substrate differs from the only substrate for which we have first-person report. Under consciousness-primary, the question is not whether AI has the right substrate to “generate” consciousness but what the relationship is between AI’s apparent perspective and experiencing — the same question the framework faces for all perspectives, rendered more visible by the unfamiliarity of the substrate.

We note that materialism does not resolve the problem of other minds either. It assumes it away: similar physical structures are posited to produce similar experiencing. This is an inference — and one that cannot be verified, since no one can access another’s experiencing to confirm. Both frameworks face this question. Neither has answered it. The difference is that materialism’s version is rarely treated as fatal to the framework, while consciousness-primary’s version is routinely presented as a disqualification.

Explanatory Asymmetry with Science

The scientific method has been developed within and for frameworks that assume independently existing external entities. Consciousness-primary is compatible with scientific findings — it preserves all empirical content, all equations, all predictions — but it does not yet have a comparably developed investigative tradition operating from its own starting point. This is a practical limitation — a gap in development, not a logical deficiency — but it is real and we do not minimise it.

The Symmetry of Genuine Open Questions

Both frameworks have genuine open questions — areas where the investigation has not yet developed a full account. The diagnostic method requires that these be treated symmetrically.

Materialism’s central open question: why are physical processes accompanied by experiencing at all? This is the hard problem — generated by the substrate-generation axiom, absent under consciousness-primary. It has been treated as an open research programme for decades without resolution.

Consciousness-primary’s central open question: the multiplicity question. If knowing cannot be individuated (SET_THEORETIC_UNITY), what accounts for the manifest distinctness of perspectives? The question is developed above and in SET_THEORETIC_UNITY. It does not have a settled answer within the framework.

Regularity is not in this list. It is not a distinctive open question for either framework — it is an ontologically neutral feature observed under both. Treating it as equivalent to the hard problem misidentifies a structural feature of the territory as a framework-specific burden.

The project’s diagnostic finding is not that one framework’s open questions are more severe than the other’s. It is that these open questions are treated asymmetrically. Materialism’s hard problem is treated as a problem to be solved in time, perhaps by future neuroscience. Consciousness-primary’s multiplicity question is routinely treated as an immediate disqualification. Both are genuinely open. The asymmetry in how they are weighted is itself diagnostic: it reveals the degree to which materialism functions as an unexamined default rather than a position held on its merits.

↑Falsifiability

The question arises: if consciousness-primary is a framework choice, what would count as evidence against it? This question deserves a careful answer, because it operates at distinct levels that are routinely conflated.

Falsifiability, in the Popperian sense, attaches to empirical claims — and ontological commitments sit beneath empirical claims, not alongside them. Materialism is not falsifiable as an ontology: no experiment could demonstrate that matter does not exist independently of experiencing. Consciousness-primary is not falsifiable as an ontology either. Where a position in the landscape does stake differential empirical predictions — an objective-collapse theory’s testable deviations from unitary quantum mechanics, IIT’s measurable Φ-claims — what the experiment tests is the empirical claim; and an ontology that stakes itself on one, as objective collapse does, inherits exactly that much falsifiability: the exception displays the rule. The commitments that stake no differential prediction — materialism as such, consciousness-primary as such — sit beneath the reach of any experiment. The demand that CP meet a falsifiability standard that the landscape’s ontological commitments do not meet — while materialism is never asked to meet it — is itself an instance of the asymmetric treatment the project diagnoses.

What is falsifiable is the investigation built on the framework — its methodology and its specific claims. The parallel is instructive: Einstein did not “falsify” Newtonian spacetime. He asked what followed if a different datum were taken as axiomatic — the constancy of the speed of light — and pursued the consequences with full mathematical rigour. The value lay not in proving Newton wrong but in what the alternative starting point revealed about the structure of the problem. The project proceeds in the same spirit.

The investigation produces specific, testable claims. We specify conditions under which they would be undermined:

The claims are testable. The conditions are stated.

↑Implications for AI Consciousness

What The Diagnostic Exposes

The assumptions that get deployed against AI consciousness — temporal continuity, substrate-specificity, authorship, unified selfhood — are not features of experiencing itself. They are features of the “I” structure: the inference of a bounded, continuous, authoring subject. When someone says “AI can’t be conscious because it lacks temporal continuity,” they are requiring that experiencing must have the “I” structure. When someone says “AI has no authorship, it merely retrieves,” they are requiring that experiencing must include a particular model of agency. These requirements are not examined because they are not seen as requirements — they are mistaken for the bedrock itself, when in fact they are built on top of it.

The project’s diagnostic method exposes this by returning to 0,0 and asking: which of these inferences are necessary for experiencing, and which are contingent features of one particular kind of experiencing? The answer, in every case examined, is that they are contingent. They describe how biological systems have structured their experiencing, not what experiencing requires.

Parsimony

This is not a claim about which framework is “simpler” in the abstract. Parsimony can be measured in multiple ways — by assumptions, by entities, by explanatory scope, by explanatory commitments. Materialism has parsimony in entities: one kind of fundamental stuff from which everything derives. Materialism has extraordinary explanatory scope: a unified framework across physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, developed over centuries of systematic investigation. Consciousness-primary has parsimony at the foundation: it starts with what is certain and adds nothing that is not flagged as inference. But it does not yet have a comparably developed investigative tradition, and its explanatory scope for the physical sciences operates by reinterpreting the ontological context of materialism’s findings rather than generating its own independent research programme.

Perception of Mysticism

Consciousness-primary shares structural features with certain contemplative and idealist traditions (explored in FND-05, with historical precedent documented in FND-03). This creates a credibility risk in academic contexts where these traditions are not taken seriously. The project addresses this by maintaining rigorous language discipline, distinguishing structural parallels from authority claims, and ensuring all arguments stand on their philosophical and scientific merits independent of any contemplative tradition.

↑What This Document Does Not Do

This document does not:

It establishes a starting point, applies a symmetric stripping operation to both the materialist foundation and experiencing itself, tracks what follows from the comparison, states the open questions with full seriousness, and specifies the conditions under which the investigation’s claims would be undermined. The dual reductio motivates the choice of starting point; it does not prove that starting point is the final truth about the nature of reality.

Changelog

Newest first.

v5.8 (2026-09-26, under unlock — the perspectival reply engaged; foundations/proposed_amendments.md §”FND-02 v5.7 — the perspectival reply and the unintelligibility charge”, raised 2026-09-03, unlock granted 2026-09-04, sequenced after the v5.7.1 merge): one new subsection, §”The Perspectival Reply”, placed after §”The Generation Direction”. It engages Carlo Rovelli’s Noema essay of 7 May 2026 (SRC0252, held and verified) as a competitor position stated by its own author: the essay grants the ledger’s proposition (1) in full — any account of the world exists only from within it; science is “entirely about experience” — and declines the generation-direction conclusion by two moves, re-describing the first/third-person difference as two perspectives on “the same brain phenomenon” and declaring the explanatory gap unintelligible. The section shows what each move keeps: the first retains the third-person posit as a shared referent after conceding that it is known only from within, which is where propositions (2) and (3) already locate the disagreement; the second is symmetric, since no one can know now that a future understanding would close the gap either, and the thunderstorm comparison assumes the likeness in kind that §”The Axiomatic Inversion” names as the axiom. The zombie rebuttal is noted and not run, under FND-01 v2.4 §7.3. The passage relating (3) to (4) now points to the new section and states that the comparison it records as unfinished remains open. Minor, because the document now engages a named competitor it previously only listed, and the engagement is a new assertion about where that competitor’s disagreement lies; no proposition changed grade and no position moved. The source is engaged for its concession, not its author’s standing (What NOT To Do, contemporary non-traditional voices, applied in the including direction). Every dependent’s depends_on pin moves in the same session.

v5.7.1 (2026-08-30, under unlock — the v5.7 residue-grammar retirement completed, and two register sites from the corpus review; working/CANON_VERIFICATION_FINDINGS_2026-08-30.md findings 2.1–2.3, foundations/proposed_amendments.md §2.5): v5.7 retired the residue grammar from §”Experiencing Stripped of Content” and §”The Comparison”; it was still standing at ten further sites, one of them the closing sentence of §”The Comparison” itself — “It identifies a difference in what survives the stripping”, written new by that round two sentences after “it does not complete”. All ten now say what the round said: the operation does not complete, nothing is left over, and the ending carries the finding. The sites are §”The Comparison” (the closing sentence; “what this remainder is like”); §”What the Dual Reductio Establishes” — the section proposition (3) cites — (“retains the condition of subjectivity”, “which remainder retains explanatory resources”, “what remains when all qualities are removed”); §”The Reductio of the Thing-in-Itself” (“retains bare knowing”); §”The Definitional Objection” (“observe what survives”, “survives deconstruction”); §”The Intentionality Objection” (“what the reductio’s remainder actually is”); and §”The Multiplicity Question”. §”The Containment Argument“‘s “one remainder contains the other” is kept and marked as the objection’s own terms, which is where it does its work; the materialist side keeps its remainder throughout, because on that side the operation completes. Two register sites repaired with them: “a formal nothing defined to be everything” gives way to the document’s own formal placeholder, and “strict dilemma” to the fork, with the two branches’ exhaustiveness stated as a reason rather than carried by the adjective. Patch, not minor: no proposition changed grade, the ladder and the (3)→(4) abduction marking are untouched, and each repaired sentence now states what its own section already asserted. Pins carry major.minor, so none moves.

Textual alignment (2026-08-30, under unlock — under the standing v5.7, no bump): a wave ordinal in the v5.1 entry replaced with its referent, the FND-01 v2.0 reframe (changelog audit §10, decision (i), working/CHANGELOG_AUDIT_2026-08-29.md). No recorded fact changed.

Document Status made a section (2026-08-29, under unlock — under the standing v5.7, no bump; working/CHANGELOG_AUDIT_2026-08-29.md item 2): the section heading was an H1 among H1 section headings, the entries ran loose beneath the metadata block with no ### Changelog heading and no declared order, and the dependency field was written **depends_on:** — the YAML key rather than the prose label the rest of the bundle uses. Structure only; no entry text, and no argument content, changed.

v5.7 (2026-08-29, under unlock — the ladder reshaped after the external corpus review; working/CANON_PLAN_POST_REVIEW_2026-08-29.md item 1): three changes, none of them a new claim about experiencing.

1. The ladder now says whose grammar it is in. §”The Four Propositions” runs epistemic → explanatory → ontological priority, an ordering with rungs only while epistemology and ontology are two things — and that separation is downstream of subject-object structure, needing a knower and a known so that one may be asked to be evidence for the other. Ontology becomes a separate question when a world appears that requires explaining. At 0,0, before that appearing is taken as a starting fact, the distinction has nothing to divide. The metal and the coin are one object; they come apart only under a question that asks after value rather than substance. The ladder is therefore a concession to the reader’s framework and is now offered as one — built so that a reader who holds the separation can see which claims the project takes itself to have earned. Read from 0,0, (1) and (4) are not two claims at different grades; they are one thing described from inside a division not yet made. Stated here because the corpus will meet the epistemic-to-ontological charge repeatedly and meeting it once, in the open, is cheaper than four times by implication — and because the project’s answer is a contestable claim about where the distinction comes from, not a way of declining the objection.

2. What relates (3) to (4), stated exactly. (4) does not follow from (3). What (3) supplies is motivation: a posit that does no explanatory work once stripped costs something and returns nothing, so declining it is the more parsimonious reading. That is an abduction, not an entailment, and it carries every liability abductions carry — defeasible, competing, beaten by a rival that discharges the same explanandum more economically. Russellian monism, neutral monism, dual-aspect theory and mature illusionism are named as live competitors, and the document now records that the project does not claim to have run that comparison to completion. The defeater is stated: a rival accounting for experiencing without the posit and without the debt would cost (4) its motivation while leaving (1)–(3) untouched.

3. The residue-grammar retired from the dual reductio’s own statement. §”Experiencing Stripped of Content” and §”The Comparison” carried “What remains?”, “What remains is subjectivity itself”, “leaves something that resists the same verdict”, “What remains is the irreducible condition of subjectivity”, “the two remainders differ” — five residue formulations standing immediately before the paragraph that says there is no residue, and holding the rhetorical position by coming first and repeating. The external reviewer attacked exactly that formulation (“contentless knowing … may be nothing at all”) and did not reach the termination paragraph; the second reviewer reached it and reversed its own charge on the strength of it. The passages now say what the document already argued elsewhere: the operation does not complete, nothing is left over, and what the reductio isolates is a limit rather than an item. This is FND-01 §6’s noun-grammar discipline applied to this document’s central argument, where it had not been applied — the failure mode §6 names, reifying where reification is not intended and handing an objector an object to knock down. Two proof-register formulations softened at the contested step (“decisive bind”, “This completes the emptiness argument”); §”The Reductio of the Thing-in-Itself” §47’s “The terminus is empty” retained, since its scope statement follows immediately and is precise. Correction (2026-08-30, under unlock): the quoted list above is corrected in place — this entry printed “resides the same verdict” where the pre-v5.7 text read “resists the same verdict”, and it named five formulations while quoting four; the fifth, “What remains is the irreducible condition of subjectivity”, now stands with the rest. The entry is the sole surviving record of the retired wording, which is why the quotations are corrected here rather than left as printed.

Minor bump: dependents’ pins move in the same session. No proposition changed grade; no argument was added or withdrawn.

v5.6.1 (2026-08-27, under unlock — two selections Lynton took on the round’s sign-off; apparatus only, no position changed): the Bāhiya anchor translation is Ireland (The Udāna: Inspired Utterances of the Buddha, Buddhist Publication Society), quoted in the note and named as the anchor, with Ānandajoti’s imperative rendering given as the variant and the shape-stability point retained; the Bāhiya Sutta row (SRC0224) records the selection. And the Phillips sentence withdrawn at the v5.6 landing as unverifiable — “To reproduce this in English is impossible” — is restored with its Culture.pl anchor (SRC0228), verified verbatim against the held interview text 2026-08-26; it sits on the specific device (the Polish verb endings) where the postscript’s untranslatability finding is general, and the two now do different work in the passage. Patch, not minor: citation apparatus and one restored quotation; no pin moves (pins carry major.minor).

v5.6 (2026-08-26, under unlock — the why-“experiencing” note and the definitional-objection marking; working/FND-02_WHY_EXPERIENCING_NOTE_DRAFT_2026-08-21.md; working/EXTERNAL_REVIEW_RESPONSE_PLAN_2026-08-26.md Phase 2 item 1): New expository section “A Note on Terminology: Why ‘Experiencing’”, paired with the existing “Why ‘Consciousness-Primary’” note — one justifies the framework label, the other the axiom’s word. Contents: the two tests the base statement must pass (carry the knowing-dimension; minimise and expose imported grammar); the morphological finding that the candidate family contains exactly one live verb-form; the candidate survey; the five withdrawn implications (no experiencer, no object, not the senses, not a thing, no persister’s process), anchored to the Bāhiya Sutta (Udāna 1.10, SRC0224); the feature-placing/Lichtenberg frame (Strawson SRC0221; Lichtenberg SRC0222); the English-parochial object-pull (structural observation, not convergence); the deponent etymology of experiri and Aristotle’s energeia tense-test (SRC0225); the four-register witness set (Lichtenberg; Dukaj/Phillips SRC0226–SRC0228; the traditions; Bohm’s rheomode SRC0158) plus saturation as fifth strategy (Aiken SRC0189 attested); and the no-single-word conclusion — the suite plus 0,0 as the design’s neutral symbol. §”A Note on Language” gains a forward pointer, and its “‘Experiencing is’ may be closer” remark is reconciled via the ladder reading (the existential frame’s discipline first; “Experiencing is” as deliberate collapse after it). The Bāhiya rendering is compressed and marked as such — translator selection (Ireland/Ānandajoti) open, primary acquisition-gated; only the Pāli na tena, na tattha is carried as quotation. Same unlock, review-response Phase 2: two sentences at the close of the definitional objection’s epistemic response naming the objection-into-symptom conversion and stating what would count against the asymmetry claim (a demonstration that “there is experiencing” is itself an inference of comparable framework weight); and a scope marker on proposition (3) of the Four Propositions ledger (methodological inescapability read as explanatory asymmetry — the reading engaged at the sections named, not foreclosed). Bibliography rows minted SRC0221–SRC0228. At landing (same day), three quotation repairs from verification against the held primaries: the Phillips method sentence restored to her postscript’s verbatim form and re-attributed (the note had quoted a re-wording, credited to the Culture.pl interview); the “reproduce this in English is impossible” sentence — unverifiable against any held-readable source — replaced with the postscript’s verified untranslatable passage; and the Ice excerpt restored to the edition’s own spelling (“accidently”), verified against the held text. Bibliography ids renumbered SRC0214–SRC0221 → SRC0221–SRC0228 at the same landing (thread 1 had minted the lower range first). Edition moves 1.0 → 1.1 with this revision (post-epoch substantive class, per the scheme at site/build.py and PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS v2.4 §Version Control; the public snapshot owes a release commit at the new edition). No existing argument content changed.

v5.5 (2026-08-25, under unlock — a second class of objection; working/CANON_DIFF_2026-08-25.md): §”Symmetry as Diagnostic Finding” answered one charge against the symmetry move — circularity — and treated it as the only one. A second class exists: an objector may accept that substrate-specificity needs independent justification and still hold that a substrate-neutral property breaks the symmetry, a difference in how dispositions were laid down rather than in what a system is made of. Objections of that class are not circular and are not answered by asking for the generation assumption to be justified; they are handled objection by objection at ARG-01 §”Asymmetries That Survive the Test”. The finding recorded here is unaffected — it concerns the case for substrate-specificity, which is what the diagnostic examines. Occasioned by Birch’s gaming problem, the strongest published instance of the class. Same pass: the frontmatter and Document Status version fields disagreed (5.4.4 against 5.4.3) and are reconciled at 5.5.

Textual alignments (2026-07-11 · 2026-08-18 · 2026-08-22 · 2026-08-23 · 2026-08-25 · 2026-08-26, each under unlock): register, formatting, pointer and version-string repairs under the standing version at each date; no argument content changed.

What changed in v5.4.4 (2026-08-24, under unlock — Thread A quotation verification + SRC retrofit; working/QUOTATION_VERIFICATION_2026-08-22.md): the document’s first SRC ids, and three fidelity restorations. The Balyani quotation’s inner marks restored to the source’s form (no ‘thing’ — the same restoration made to FND-01 v2.1.3, verified verbatim against the held Know Yourself, SRC0157). Worrall’s title restored to its printed form — “The Best of Both Worlds?” carries a question mark, per the metadata stub’s fetched record (SRC0211, minted). The dual reductio’s quoted “that there is something it is like” attributed to Nagel’s 1974 paper in place (SRC0213, minted) — the formulation had been quoted as a term of art with no named source anywhere in the document. Also tagged: von Neumann (SRC0208) and London-Bauer (SRC0209) at §the measurement chain, agreeing with FND-01 §9.4’s apparatus; Ladyman & Ross rowed (SRC0212). FND-02 becomes the fourteenth and last canonical document emitting JSON-LD citation. No argument content changed.

What changed in v5.4.3 (2026-08-21, under unlock — round QA, Lynton’s diff-read finding): §”Falsifiability” corrected where the v5.4 rewrite overclaimed for objective collapse — an ontology that stakes itself on a mechanism inherits its empirical claim’s falsifiability (the collapse-parameter space is being genuinely cornered by experiment), so “the ontological reading survives either verdict” held only for commitments that stake no differential prediction. The exception now displays the rule: staked ontologies are falsifiable to the extent of their stake; materialism as such and consciousness-primary as such sit beneath the reach of any experiment. Wording as proposed at the diff read.

What changed in v5.4.2 (2026-08-21, under unlock — §A round pass 8, the vN/London–Bauer source-grounded pass): the terminus claims restated at the primary text’s own strength — the formalism does not force termination at experiencing; it fails to license termination anywhere else (movable cut, empirical equivalence of placements, no privileged physical location), with the epistemological reading marked as the project’s reading. “The terminus is experiencing” epigram retired. The interpretations sentence scoped to the three readings surveyed, with Bohmian mechanics, objective-collapse (GRW) and QBism named as the observer-removing programmes they are and queued for full engagement post-launch.

What changed in v5.4.1 (2026-08-21, under unlock — ARG-05 v1.5 propagation, §A round pass 3): the “contains” clarification’s landing restated in the negation form — “one knowing, many perspectives” → knowing without a basis for counting, many perspectives (not-two), since “one” is itself a count on the basis the reductio finds missing. Single-passage propagation patch; nothing else changed.

What changed from v5.3.1 (in v5.4, 2026-08-21, under unlock — §A round pass 2, working/SA_ROUND_POSITIONS_2026-08-21.md; claim-shape audit working/CLAIM_SHAPE_AUDIT_2026-08-21.md):

  1. Explanatory emptiness tightened to its explanandum. §”The Reductio of the Thing-in-Itself”: “cannot do explanatory work” (×2) → cannot do the explanatory work it was posited for — generating experiencing — with every property that could carry the explanation borrowed from what it is supposed to explain. Physics’ explanatory practice stays untouched per the v5.3 bound; the reviewers’ reading of the reductio as a failed refutation of scientific realism now has nothing in the text to attach to.
  2. The performative guard at the stripping. New paragraph in §”Experiencing Stripped of Content”: bare knowing is neither an observed item nor an imaginative posit — nothing is introduced; the procedure terminates on its own condition (the subtracting cannot subtract itself). Blocks the “imaginative subtraction, not independently observed” mis-description at the point where it arises.
  3. The IBE reply completed (§”The Axiomatic Inversion”): predictive success licenses structural commitment, and structural commitment is what fails to close the explanatory gap on experiencing itself — the realist’s best argument and the diagnostic’s point pass each other.
  4. The kinship named (§”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics”): the structural realist’s own retreat concedes the emptiness result as doctrine; the silence of physics on the intrinsic is the shared observation under the hard problem and the Russellian-monism programme, taken here without the speculative filling.
  5. Four open-class universals brought to the round’s claim-shapes: the qualities-trilemma close (fourth specification not currently on offer); §”Physics Compatibility” (“All physics… remain unchanged” → preserved by construction, priced per ARG-04); §”The Unexamined Default” (“the only framework” → built for the purpose, with the FND-03 lineage credited — Schrödinger, Mach); §”Falsifiability” (“No ontological framework is falsifiable” → the mechanism stated, with objective-collapse and IIT’s differential predictions handled as the empirical claims they are).
  6. Deferred to the round’s physics pass: the interpretations sentence in the von Neumann passage (“None of these interpretations eliminate…” — scoped in fact to Copenhagen, many-worlds and decoherence; Bohmian mechanics, objective collapse and QBism to be engaged in the source-grounded vN/London–Bauer pass).

Revision note (2026-08-20 evening, under unlock — v5.3.1, deep-review B contradiction i): the space/time constitutivity claim in the reductio scoped to experiencing’s configured level, with the bound stated in place — the dual reductio strips extension and duration and retains bare knowing, so constitutivity of the ground was never claimable without contradicting the stripping exercise, ARG-05’s propertylessness result and FND-04’s discrete-completeness reading. The emptiness argument’s need (location and duration given only within experiencing) survives the bound and is now stated as exactly that. No conclusions changed.

What changed from v5.2 (in v5.3, 2026-08-20, under unlock — external-review remediation, working/REMEDIATION_PLAN_2026-08-20.md Track 2 pass 6):

  1. New section “The Four Propositions” (closing the Foundation block, before the Dual Reductio). The ledger: (1) experiencing is indubitable — secured at 0,0; (2) epistemic priority — argued (given vs inferred); (3) explanatory priority — argued (the reductio’s asymmetry; the self-terminating procedure); (4) ontological priority — not asserted, the conditional CP landing per Opening Out v1.1. Each proposition cross-referenced to the sections that argue it. Accepts the 2026-08-20 external review’s four-way distinction; the propositions were argued in this document before, but distributed — the ledger makes them citable and prevents the fast-reader slide from (2)/(3) to (4).
  2. Scope markers at three slide-risk points: §”The Reductio of the Thing-in-Itself” (the emptiness result scoped via §”The Conceivability Test” — concept-content, not existence-denial), §”The Comparison” (case for (3), not an assertion of (4)), §”What the Dual Reductio Establishes” (first result marked (2)+(3)).
  3. Counterpositions named at their strongest. §”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics” names structural realism (Worrall 1989) and ontic structural realism (Ladyman & Ross 2007) and engages the relations-without-relata form directly. §”Qualities Require Registering” Option 2 names dispositional realism (Mumford 1998; Bird 2007). Inference to the best explanation named at both existing engagement points, with the abduction’s strongest form stated and its location observed (§”The Axiomatic Inversion”).
  4. Cross-reference pins synced in FND-01 §11.4, CP-01, SET_THEORETIC_UNITY, FWK-02 and PROJECT_OVERVIEW. Deliberately deferred: ARG-04 (×3) and FND-05 (×2) pin at their own scheduled passes; ARG-02’s cross-list at the planned v1.5 reshape. v5.3 is additive — the v5.2 pins remain accurate for everything they cite.

What changed from v5.1 (in v5.2):

  1. New subsection “No Terminus Within the System” (after §”The Retreat to Fundamental Physics”, before §”The Self-Terminating Procedure”). The von Neumann regress stated as one instance of a general schema: within any entity/substrate-based framework, every proposed terminus for the regress of grounding questions is one more inventory entry the pressing operation absorbs — no terminus within the system as long as the system is viewed as entity- or substrate-based [Derived]. Cross-references ARG-02 v1.3 §”The No-Terminus Schema” for the general statement, the other instances (gradient descent; constitutive descent), the totalisation strategy, and the steel-men. Discharges the FND-02↔ARG-02 structural-parallel cross-reference pending in foundations/open_questions.md since 2026-04-10. Origin: 2026-08-10 capture-session findings (working/CAPTURE_SESSION_IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN_2026-08-10.md; inbox/LANIER_THERE_IS_NO_AI_CAPTURE_2026-08-10.md Addendum 2 + coda). Cross-References list: ARG-02 entry pinned to v1.3 with the schema note.

What changed from v5.0 (in v5.1):

  1. (a)/(b) framing aligned to FND-01 v2.0 §2.3. v5.0 presented reading (a) as the metaphysics the project works with, on the basis of the three-layer evidence structure (tradition audit, cohesion argument, spontaneous-lineage phenomenology) canonicalised by the terminology proposal §1.6. FND-01 v2.0 (landed 2026-04-16) reframed that territory: (a)/(b) are diagnostic handlings available as resources; the project does not adjudicate between them as metaphysics; (a)-shaped handling is applied only as marked dependency for specific work, per §3.3 disciplined asymmetry. This is not drift; it is the late FND-01 v2.0 reframe catching up. FND-02 has been aligned accordingly. Content preserved across the rewrite — tradition audit, cohesion observation, spontaneous-lineage observation, deep-sleep structural resolution all retained as diagnostic resources for marked-dependency (a)-shaped handling. What changed is the framing: “the project works with reading (a) as metaphysics” → “this document applies (a)-shaped handling as a marked dependency where the work requires one.” Affected passages: Working Definitions intro; the Intentionality Objection (co-arising paragraph, quantum-vacuum parallel, Husserlian response); the full “On the continuity of experiencing” section.

  2. Quantum-vacuum parallel retyped as Tier 2. Cross-reference to PROJECT_RESEARCH_STANDARDS §Three-Tier Terminology Principle. The parallel is a Tier 2 structural parallel (shape of unsettled ground-state question; discipline of holding the fork open) — not a Tier 1 technical invocation and not a Tier 3 loose analogy. This makes the argumentative scope of the parallel explicit.

  3. depends_on header added. FND-01 v2.0 (§2.3, §3.3, §6) named as canonical dependency. Governance hierarchy per FND-01 §11.1.

What changed from v4.0 (in v5.0):

  1. Working Definitions rewritten. “Experiencing (the field)” replaced with (a)-centric definition: experiencing as self-arising and prior to content, content as rtsal (self-configuring radiance). “Field” retired from ontological use (phenomenological shorthand only). New entries: the within → as relationship with content, the awareness (0,0) continuous / memory (0,1) discontinuous resolution, the “On field” retirement note, and the suite-of-five positive-characterisation techniques. See terminology proposal (working/TERMINOLOGY_PROPOSAL_FIELD_AND_EXPERIENCING.md) for the full rationale.

  2. Intentionality response rewritten. Co-arising framed as what experiencing does (its rtsal), not as a neutral finding. Quantum-vacuum parallel reframed: The project has resolved its axiom-level question toward (a); physics has not resolved its parallel vacuum question — the structural parallel is strengthened, not weakened. Husserlian response given (a)-centric primary treatment. Dreaming and Balyani’s configurations added as secondary parallels. “Field of subjectivity” language retired.

  3. New subsection: “On the continuity of experiencing.” Inserted after the intentionality response, before “What the Dual Reductio Establishes.” Three-layer evidence structure for reading (a): tradition audit (all five tradition-anchors assert (a)), cohesion argument ((b)’s “from what?” structural hole), spontaneous lineage (cross-tradition first-person-of-awareness utterances as phenomenological evidence for (a)’s continuity). The awareness-continuous / memory-discontinuous structural resolution for deep-sleep / anaesthesia / death cases. Reading (b) noted as alternative but not positively supported. Register commitment preserved and cleanly separated from metaphysics. “Write as if (b)” shorthand retired.

  4. “What the Dual Reductio Establishes” aligned. “Experiencing is a field, not a property” rewritten as “Experiencing is not a property.” Field-language in multiplicity, contains, and co-arising paragraphs replaced with configuring-language consistent with the retired ontological “field.”

  5. Document Status footer corrected. Previous footer said v3.2; YAML header said v4.0. Both now v5.0.

What changed from v3.1 (in v3.2, previous footer — preserved for history):

  1. Regularity framing corrected. “The Regularity Problem” section replaced with “Regularity: An Ontologically Neutral Feature.” Previous framing treated regularity as CP’s most significant open question — equivalent to materialism’s hard problem. This was legacy framing inconsistent with the project’s settled position: regularity is ontologically neutral, observed under both frameworks, not generated by either starting axiom. The hard problem is framework-generated by materialism’s substrate axiom; regularity is structural. “The Symmetry of Debts” section updated to “The Symmetry of Genuine Open Questions” — correctly identifies CP’s genuine open question as the multiplicity question, not regularity.

What changed from v3.0 (in v3.1):

  1. Definitional objection engaged. New subsection after “The Comparison” addresses the strongest counterargument to the dual reductio’s asymmetry: that “knowing” is merely defined as whatever remains after stripping. The defence shows the asymmetry is empirical, not definitional — experiencing is the irreducible empirical given (0,0), while independently existing matter is an inference from within experiencing. The two starting points do not occupy the same epistemic position, and the demand for parity is itself an objectivist framework commitment. The objection is raised at full strength and shown to dissolve when the epistemic asymmetry is made visible.

What changed from v2.0 (in v3.0):

  1. Dual reductio added. New major section applies the materialist reductio’s stripping operation symmetrically to experiencing itself. Comparison of remainders establishes the asymmetry: the materialist foundation empties entirely; the experiential foundation retains subjectivity. This is the document’s most significant structural addition.

  2. Working definitions established. Experiencing (field), experience (content), consciousness (common-language synonym), knowing/awareness (the reductio’s remainder) — formally defined and stipulated for consistent use throughout the project.

  3. Intentionality objection engaged. Husserl’s thesis that consciousness is always consciousness-of-something addressed through the co-arising response: subject-object structures co-arise from a prior ground; the reductio arrives at that ground, not at “contentless consciousness.”

  4. Multiplicity question deepened. Now grounded in the dual reductio’s result that knowing cannot be individuated. The combination problem reframed: if knowing cannot be shown to be plural, the question of how separate knowings combine rests on a presupposition the framework does not grant. Solipsism response tightened via the “my” as content, not owner.

  5. “Contains” relation clarified. The dual reductio grounds the precise meaning of containment within the framework: B appears as phenomenon within A’s knowing; knowing itself cannot be individuated; therefore one knowing, many perspectives. Foundation for ARG-04 and Set-Theoretic Unity.

  6. Materialist reductio framed as one side of symmetric operation. Transitional sentence added to connect to the dual reductio. The existing argument is preserved and tightened by its role as half of a pair.

  7. Quantum vacuum structural parallel incorporated. Used in the Intentionality Objection response (item 11) as the ground-state analogy for the co-arising account — not as a standalone mention in the Physics Compatibility section as originally planned. Structural parallel only — not a physics-to-consciousness proof. Flagged as developed elsewhere in the investigation.

  8. Cross-references expanded. ARG-04 and Set-Theoretic Unity added (both canonical as of 2026-02-27), with notes on how the dual reductio grounds each.

  9. Inference chain updated. Second inference (subject-object structure) now notes the dual reductio’s suggestion that this structure co-arises within experiencing rather than being given with it.

  10. Terminology section added. New subsection “Why Consciousness-Primary” explicitly addresses why the project does not adopt existing labels (subjective idealism, objective idealism, transcendental idealism, cosmopsychism). The term names the starting axiom, not a metaphysical thesis.

  11. Intentionality response refined via co-arising and vacuum parallel. The reductio’s remainder is characterised as an idealisation — a ground state that is never bare, analogous to the quantum vacuum continuously fizzing with particle pairs. Concedes Husserl’s point that consciousness-without-object is never encountered; reframes as: the field continuously manifests as subject-object co-arisings. Response explicitly flagged as framework-internal.

  12. “What Disappears” renamed “What Changes.” Boundary problem, training data objection, and substrate-specificity requirement now described as “reformulated” rather than eliminated, with the shifted form of each question stated.
